The 1st picture is branches from the second picture.
I was thinking the limbs looked like tree of heaven but the trunk doesn't

Could the limbs of a toh been laid near the elm, to trick someone into picking them up?

The edge of the great storm has buried/frozen it won't be able to smell it for awhile now

Ok my next best guess would be Linden/basswood. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a cottonwood, so could be. The bark seems too aggressive for little leaf Linden.

It does look like it could be Cottonwood, but OP would definitely know if it was.
Either way, its close and its free!

I think that when and if you cut into it, you'll know if its cotton wood or not. I bucked up quite a bit at a local brush pile and ended up leaving it due to the smell. Couldnt get it out of my nose for a couple days.

Can't say I'd call that Cottonwood by any means. Can't say I would call it my familiar Elm either? Odd. Notta clue!

    I agree!

Looking at what is left of the leaves at the base of the tree and the bark, it does look right. Rare enough around me, I don't think I've ever cut into one, so I have no ideas based on the wood.
