    Very sweet smelling when split. Somewhat spicy smelling?? I think it is a Maple but I am not that familiar with the Maples.

    Without looking at other replies, sassafras. Easy splitting, fast drying and smells great...almost like root beer. Perfect for SS and small splits make great kindling. Spits a lot in the fire.
