I noticed a lot of wood dust around my stacks. And one night I was in the garage where I had stacked this wood and could hear tiny grinding sounds. So I just restacked the wood out side. Wondering if I should be worried. For what it's worth the bugs are going after oak from two separate scrounges. A bit of action in the birch, some in red maple but nothing in the locust or ash. Pics are of what the holes look like, the dust and a grub that popped out after I split.
Not sure what they are, but see the same in my wood, even undercover. Seems to like certain species over another.
Borer beetle larvae of some type. While they are eating some of your wood, I know for sure that they convert back into btu's when put in the stove.
thanks...are they a threat to my garage? the wood was in there a while and don't want them to eat up my framing.
The beetle eggs are usually set on or just under the bark and the hatched larvae bore in from there. Usually surviving on the carbs just under the bark at first. Your frame wood is missing the bark portion of their life cycle and your garage wood is likely far too dry to be of interest. Most beetle/ larvae only want live or fresh cut tree. Most bugs found in firewood would not survive inside a dry house. They would shrivel up in a corner and die. Maybe even eaten by a spider.
Our chickens love those. They're just aerating the splits for ya'. Keeps the drying process on track.
My last load of Doug Fir was packed full with these “worms”. I was peeling off the bark before stacking and my son (2 years old) was walking around picking up his worms....until one bit him and now all he talks about is the “bad worms” and how they “munch wood”.
