When we sold the farm in 2007 (after living there for 13 years) I had asked the new owners if I could pull off one of the boards inside the barn that had lots of family/friends initials carved into it, starting around the late 1800s. It never got done. My son and I finally went back there today and removed that board with the owner. We plan to put it above our TV in the living room. It was quite a day of reminiscing. Lots of memories. I took some pics, but for some reason I can't retrieve them to post a few... only through my email so I sent a few to wildwest (thanks)... she says she'll post some.

That's a great piece of family history to salvage and display.

I you would like some hand-forged hanging rings or hardware to hang it up, give me a shout.

We don't know who all of these initials belong to. Should be fun to try and figure them out. We already have a 6"x6"x6" chunk of a beam that was found while we lived there. It has the initials written in pencil of the men who worked on building the barn (barn had been moved around the late 1800s from an adjacent property)... my great grandfather's initials are on it.

We built a "crow's nest" 30' feet up at the peak of the barn. It's held up well.

When we went under the other barn that they had completely re-vamped, we found it totally stuffed with alder poles. I've never seen so many cut and stored for firewood. A lot of work. Had to be well over 1000 of them... the area is 12' wide by 8' high by 32' deep... now that's hoardin' some wood...

A person could use all those alder sticks to make some fishing weirs. That's how the people who lived in this neck of the woods, the Abenaki, before the settlers arrived, used as one way of catching fish.
