Headed out to Campinspecter's favorite spot for wood cutting. We pull up to an area along the road and I look out and see lots of limbs, old stumps, salal, salmon berry and debris left from the helicopter logging. I am thinking this looks like slim pickings. A couple of hours later, we have a full truck and we are on the way home. I think campinspecter is a much better firewood hoarder than I am. Empty truck and wood splitter waiting to go to work. yes, the eagle eyed ones among you have spotted the difference. No, Gasifier, it is not a Tundra nor my coveted Autumn Orange 2016 Tacoma but a new to us 2014 Tacoma. campinspecter found a deal too good to resist so after waiting for the canopy to come, we are now back wood harvesting. So glad I didn't put the FHC sticker on the old canopy. Wood splitter got a new wiring harness this winter as well. A log that Campinspecter found in the debris. Supervisors having a look around. Empty truck Full truck. It packs about the same as the old one.
Cool pictures and truck. I have a certain affinity for Toyota trucks myself, even with all the frame issues.
No need for the plywood liner on the floor of the bed! Old habits die hard I know, but that bed is composite plastic and tough as hell. Won't ever dent or rust and only ones I've ever seen broken have been in pretty dramatic crashes. I'm 105,000 miles and nearly ten years into my 2006 Tacoma and still love it. She'll make it another ten no sweat.
Didn't have time to write this in the morning but our wood cutting was quite the adventure. We took the supervisors and they had a great time. After we have finished, we go for a walk up the road so Campinspecter can check more of the debris for logs. Everyone gets in the truck and we head home. We stopped once to put the cover on the wood splitter and then go home. when we get home, TWO dogs get out of the truck - NOT three. hearts pounding, we put TWO dogs in the house, jump in the car and head back quickly to where we were splitting. We are hoping Cricket didn't get out when we stopped to put the cover on as it was beside the road. She's not at that stop so we head into the bush to our cutting site. Around a couple of corners and through some dips and over the last one, there she is standing in the middle of the road. For those not familiar with our area, the wood cutting site was about an hour away from home with a population of cougar, wolf, and bear predators. Deer are everywhere and if she had decided to chase one, she could have been anywhere. She does chase bear when she is with the other two as backup. God had his hand over her the whole 2+ hours she was on her own. Now there is a mandatory dog count before the truck or car moves anywhere. A precaution that I am sure DaveGunter must make part of his routine of loading dogs.
Nice job both of you! My heart sank when I read your last post, lump in throat, but read on, and all was well! Pheww! Thank goodness!
wow Woodwidow that must have been a scary drive back. It must have been agonizing knowing that cricket was out there not aware of all the hazards around her. All ended well thankfully. Bears are out in the Rockies as well....... early, early, early! That aside that looked like a fun day out. Thanks for sharing your pictures with the group.
Wow I'm sure glad you find her okay, I would be freaking out Good day gathering up the wood their Ya'll
Yikes! Oh, I get it now. Cricket was just scoping for more good firewood. She's such a little trooper!
AAAACK! I would have been freaking out. So glad you got her back! I have had nightmares about that exact thing happening. One of the GPS collars I use with the Hounds is on the fritz, it will occasionally "get stuck" in a way that it looks like it is working properly but the dogs position is not correct. This happened the other day when we were leaving the trailhead, I didn't notice till we were nearly home and the GPS said the dog was still at the trail, I nearly drove off the road trying to get a count of hounds in the bed of the truck before I realized what was happening.
I will try to get a pic today when we go out. this is all second growth so the trees are pretty close together.
I had a chuckle out of one of your lines in the first post of this thread. It read something like "it looked like slim pickings at first but ended up with a truck load". I can't tell you the number of times the same has happened to me! I'll finally stop after driving past a spot thats "no good" and end up going back to it a couple more times to make sure I get everything! Nice truck....lucky!
I put a crack in the bed of my 05 Tacoma with a piece of wood easy fix with J-B weld....... I gotta be more careful.
