Kids are putting Drano, tin foil, and a little water in plastic drink bottles and capping it up - leaving it on lawns, in mail boxes, in gardens, on driveways etc. just waiting for you to pick it up intending to put it in the rubbish, but you'll never make it!!! If the bottle is picked up, and the bottle is shaken even just a little - in about 30 seconds or less it builds up enough gas which then explodes with enough force to remove some your extremities. The liquid that comes out is boiling hot as well. Don't pick up any plastic bottles that may be lying in your yards or in the gutter, etc. Pay attention to this. A plastic bottle with a cap. A little Drano. A little water. A small piece of foil. Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM!! No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc. Please ensure that everyone that may not have email access are also informed of this. Share this with everyone you know

Ahh yes. Memories. I may or may not have bought a few bottles of works toilet bowl cleaner and foil back in my stupid kid days. We did it in the woods however, not the city.

If memory serves me right, Draino doesn't work that well. You need "The Works" like bocefus78 said. I have fond memories of driving around late at night in highschool and setting these off in my friends yards at 3:00 AM, waking everybody in the house up. But those fond memories stopped one night when a buddy of mine asked what would happen if he added gas into the mix. I told him that nothing would happen, it would mess up the chemical mixture and he'd just waste a bottle. Turns out he was actually carrying a small bottle of gas with him, but didn't tell the rest of us about it.

On my way home later that night I drive by one of the houses we had hit and its lit up like a Christmas tree with lights from cops, ambulance, and fire trucks. That one bottle with the gas in it didn't explode and the dad found it and called the cops. The cops called the local equivalent of a bomb squad, they send the bottle to Columbus, OH for testing and then a cop shows up at my parents' house a few days later asking me to follow him to the police station for booking. Apparently just the toilet bowl cleaner is one thing, but adding gas makes it an "explosive devise" even though nothing happened.

The dad of the house begged the local prosecutor not to press charges since he knew us all pretty well, but the prosecutor wanted to make an example out of us. The guy who actually did it was 17, so his record was wiped clean when he turned 18. Two other guys were with us too that night, but they started for the basketball team and their coach happened to be buddies with the county prosecutor, so of course nothing happened to them. I was 18, was the one driving and had no connections to get me off the hook, so I still have a misdemeanor on my record that pops up whenever I switch jobs. I should probably get that expunged.

The lesson of that story is don't be friends with stupid people. The guy who mixed the gas in is still the dumbass as he used to be, he can't hold down a job for more than 6 months, and even those are crappy jobs. He's in his 30's now and still has to occasionally move back in with his parents. I don't associate with him anymore. The rest of us are pretty successful, but even back in high school we were all on the honor roll and considered "good kids".

I believe that is the video game mentality. Just hit the start button, and the game resets.

I would just hate to see some senior finding one of those sitting on his lawn and then the chit hits the fan when he tries to remove and discard it.

It goes much deeper than video games. Games are just a scapegoat for allowing your kids to live in a fantasy world. And no, I'm not a gamer.

Kids can sneak out and do stupid stuff on their own for sure. But I firmly believe that the amount of freedom allowed by the parents should be directly tied to the amount of maturity/responsibility observed in the kid. And if those trusts/boundaries are pushed or broken, the consequences at home should be feared far more so than the legal ramifications.

Used to make these and set them off in the backyard. Never did anything nefarious with them though. Does Mr Wizard still play on TV? He had some "educational" stuff back in the day on his program.

    What?
Now you want parents to raise their own kids?!? You crazy?!? ;)

There has to be maturity and responsibility in the parent before they can teach their own children to be mature and responsible. I don't think its just the video games that turn children into monsters. Its just part of a bigger problem. If you want your children to be good people you have to spend the time with them that it takes to make them good people. If you let kids spend their day in front of the electronic baby sitter, you will get exactly what you invest, nothing.

We come from the same school, brother.

You need to be tested and licensed to drive a vehicle, fly a plane, shoot a gun, practice law, practice medicine, handle exotic animals, fish, hunt and even get married. How come you don't need a license to fornicate, procreate and raise kids?????? From what I've seen in some cases, ever increasing daily, there should not only be required licensing, but also a parental apprenticeship and testing requirement before some people are allowed to play the "parenting game".

I think that's the new normal.
Date, have a kid or two to see how it works, split up, start over...
if you don't get married, there is no reason you cant just break up when life gets hard.
And we're back to where we started, immature and no responsibility
