My thimble requires a 7.5" framing to install the wall thimble. Have any of you had to do this? If so, did you open the wall to the studs to secure the horizontal?
And what purpose does this serve? Is it just to add additional support to the thimble for those that would be going through drywall?

My walls are like a thick real wood paneling. I could easily make a 7.5" square cut out, Frame it secured to the wall. But should I go the stud route?

So the opening will land dead center of a stud cavity?

    What brand thimble?

I have Duravent and only cutout the middle round pass through and just secured it with 8 screws....4 outside 4 inside.....I didn't mess with studding it out...

    Did you understand that? Lol

Yes, I understood lol. I don't think framing it or studding it out is necessary. Especially where I am installing it is all wood and will be secure. But I will still frame it per instructions but will most likely just secure my frame to the wooden walls, not the studs. That way in am still following the manufacturers recommended set up.

I don't remember my kit saying anything about studding but that was many moons ago...I have less brain cells now and CRS.

Yeah, it may not be necessary. The instructions state to " cut a square opening in the wall in accordance with the dimensions in table 1". Table one has a choice of vent components and framing dimensions. I took framing dimensions to actually build a frame. But I guess it doesn't specifically sat that...

That is why I am asking the questions. I can see how it would help with placement between studs like smoke said, and it would add support for the vertical rise and weight of venting.

The bracket on the outside also supports weight too....you'll be good!

I'd run two horizontals just far enough apart to secure the thimble on top & bottom. More secure, IMO.

I think the general point with duravent(or others) is to require the studs to maintain the air gap in the installation.I like their through the wall products but am getting a litlle mad at their pipe.Just remember there is supposed to be an air gap(depending on mfg.) It is very easy to add in small framing--construction addheisive and a few screws,to make it safe and sound.

Hey Propane, I am late to the party, but I thought I would share what I did. As a former fireman I like to be extra cautious, so when I cut the whole out I was able to sneak two 2x4 in the opening to create a fire stop. God forbid something was to happen this little step will give me a few extra minutes. Here is some pics of how I did it. Good luck with your install, you may even be done already lol!

Nice pics BrokenWing, I have not started the install yet. Waiting on getting the paperwork to the town for permits. I see the 2x4 you got on the sides. I never thought of them as being a fire stop. Perhaps that is why they want it framed?? Thank for the photos
