Has anyone seen a similar version of this vintage kindling maker? It looks to be from 1910 to 1920 by the design on the box. It works really well, turning a few short pieces of plank into a pile of kindling very quickly. And it's much safer than an axe. You can't cut your hands or fingers. You tap the wood with a hammer. I haven't been able to trace the registered design number yet. Thanks, Simon Forum lurker and first time poster The Three-edged Woodchopper Just Hit It To Split It Regd. No. 779164
That is awesome. I like the slogan "Just hit it to split it" hahahahaha. You can use that to split small limbs that are a bit tedious to split by hand. I love vintage stuff. On a related note, this is how I split kindling. Take all the shorties that the tree guys give me and make use of them since they are too short for stacking in the holz hausen. I guess you could call it old school.
Thanks. It's red oak. I've done it to norway maple, sugar maple, black locust, and spruce. They are all pretty easy to do when short like that and first prepared into wedges. I've done the wedges by hand with a maul but you can get super skinny wedges by using the hydro splitter.
