I want to get my wife a vacuum sealer for Christmas, but I don't know anything about them. What do I look for? I just want to find one on Amazon and have it shipped to me. I've gotten all of here presents there so far this year, just trying to stay away from the stores.

I used the original model food saver brand for a looooong time before it finally gave up on me. It got used on at least 3 deer a year, for many years, on top of normal everyday use, and did not know me a penny when she quit.

FWIW, I bought the rolls instead of bags because then you can make them as big or small as you want. Want to vaccuum pack a 4 foot long fish? No problem! Lots of wasted material with the bags IMO.

I had one of the original food savers, then I gave it to the aunt and got me a new one. I'll take a pic tonight...

+1000 on the food saver brand sealers, and on rolls instead of bags. I have found the Cabelas brand bags to be the best value/$.

Last time I looked ziplock brand freezer bags were cheaper than purchasing the rolls this was the biggest deterent for me has this changed? Food rarely last (gets eaten) more than 3-6 months even in the deep freezer. Does a vaccum sealer provide any other benefits besides increased storage and freshness?

Yea, ZERO freezer burn if you do it right. Ive had some stuff in there 4 years... came out like it was fresh.

The biggest reason we use one is that its just me and my wife, and we shop at costco. They have great beef, pork, chicken, and fish. Just more than we can use if we get it. Problem solved. Bring home 40lbs of meat and bag it seal it when you get home, we only go to costco every 3-4 months because of the food saver.

Another Food Saver and Cabelas rolls user. Have had ours for 10+ years-3-4 deer a year plus some occasional bulk purchases. We have found deer steaks on the bottom of the freezer that our 3 years old, no freezer burn and great taste.

This is the one I've got now. It's got more options than my original did.

I use it for mainly for jerky, okra, and tomatoes. I'm trying to get Mom and Dad to use for Deer...

I think any of there's would suffice, just depends on how many bells and whistles "she" would need or require. Good Luck..

Yes, I wouldn't have believed until I started freezing okra. I had some over two years that tasted just like they actually just came from the garden. Now with ziplock bags you can get close if you put a straw in on the one end close it all the way to the straw. Then start sucking. When most of the air is gone slide the straw up and slip the zipper closed.

I get my vacuum bag material on Ebay in 50 foot rolls. Less expensive and they work as good if not better than food saver material.

Anothet vote for food saver. I have a stand up model that's at least 8 years old. I use it quite often. And yes by the larger rolls and save some $$
