Will be in the Colorado east and west slopes this summer. Probably drive to the Black hills from there. Have been there a number of times (both places) and would like to hear suggestions about the seldom visited, lesser known spots along the way. I've seen the faces in rock for the first time in the 70's and even though they're still impressive, their expressions haven't changed. Might consider gold panning in Co as long as it's not at some tailings of an old mine. Thanks.
You could swing up to Sturgis to take in the annual festival. It's always quite the show...............
Sand dunes, Mesa Verde, and royal gorge in So Colo. Most of the ski resorts in Colo have summer activities too, and Glenwood springs hotsprings pool is always fun. Lake Powell? Sorry, I am not much of a traveler though I should know more
My parents say Devil's Tower is something to see. But that is a good ways from where you will be. I have never been in that area before. Let us know how you like it. Why will you be in that area? Just a vacation your are taking? Folks you know in that area you are seeing?
Rotti, Been there. A number of times. Enjoyed each one! WW, have been to Mesa Verde a few times as well as Buffalo Bills (contested) burial site. We also drive right past Glenwood only because we always go to Ouray springs. Sand dunes, Royal Gorge, and Mother Cabrini will be searched for. Gas, Devils tower is indeed amazing just as the scenery on the way to it. The extended family would be in Colorado, the primary vacation destination. I'm just trying to squeeze more out of this trip than I should. We've both been to the Black Hills/surrounding area before, but its close to ten years now. Might be better off (health wise) for me if I don't push 99 too much!
COME GET ME! how's that for a suggestion? kidding of course, but if you ever get to Appalachia look me up
I'll echo checking out the Badlands in SD. I just drove through though, and found it boring after the first 15 minutes. I wish I had time to hike there some, a co-worker of mine went backpacking there and loved it. If you like to fish, some of the most memorable trout fishing I've done was in Custer State Park. Also Colorado was a pretty darn good fishing trip as well. And every body that goes through that area of SD needs a Wall Drug bumpersticker lol.
Yoops, let me ask dear husband, he was a huntin' & fishin' fool back in the day and should know some good spots on the western slope, though he hasn't been there recently. The only gold panning he knows of up there old tailings...... LOL you could tour the pellet plant near walden
Been to royal gorge in 83', great place to visit. USAF academy has some sights, sand dunes are cool and the hot springs are also a nice stop. I've hiked the Sangre De Cristos as well.
