Went by a garage sale yesterday and saw this 028 saw. Guy said it had sat in the shed for several years and he could not get it to start. He said he had tried every conceivable adjustment on the four adjustment screws to the carb but no luck. It turned over well and had good compression so long story short I got it for $30. I figured I could unload it for parts for that much. I rushed home and cleaned the air filter and poured out and replaced the old gas. Spark and plug looked fine so I preset the high and low jets on the carb and the idle screw from the on line manual. The manual said only 3 adjustment screws. Where was the fourth that the guy was talking about? I noticed there was a funny looking screw on the left side of the saw near the carb that looked like an adjustment screw but was actually a bushing bolt for the anti vibe system. It was backed out a ways so I tightened it. I can't help but believe that he thought it was a carb mixture screw! Almost fooled Me. Bar wear surfaces are better than the paint wear would lead you to believe and it had a new chain. There is a tiny bit of bar oil dripping after running but that stops quickly. Is there an oil adjustment on the 028? I could not find any info in the manual online. I guess I will turn this over on Craig's List. Don't need to make a killing but am curious about a fair price? Thanks for any input.
Most 028s need a fuel and impulse line after sitting. Carb kit, filter, air filter a lot of the time, too. You got it for a fair price. Did you put money into it? If it’s running great and you touch up the chain, you could probably help someone out who needs a firewood saw for the fall.
Yup. Fresh gas and cleaned the air filter which was terrible dirty. The high and low mixture screws were way off as was the idle. I did the preset adjustments and it runs like a champ. Just had to readjust the idle. I cleaned it up a little and sharpened the chain. Apparently the lines are ok as it runs with no problems.
$200-250 seems to be the going price around here. I paid $225 for mine April of last year. Mine was the 028 super which is 52cc. Yours is a 47cc version. List it for $250 and take the first $200 offered. Heres a couple links. Newest member to the family. The Legendary Stihl 028 Chainsaw - HL Supply Blog
The 028’s have probably cut several hundred cubic MILES of firewood! I sold a pristine super for $300, but I had to wait a while to find the right buyer. There are no adjustments for the oil pump. It is driven by a gear train on the clutch drum. Dripping after running but not cutting is a good thing.
Can't really say not having run them side by side. Besides this saw has a green chain on it and the o26 has a skip tooth so too many variables anyway.
Hey Buzz, thanks for the info. My first real saw was an 028 with points and condenser and no chain stop. I bought it when I cleared the land and built our first home. The condenser failed and I converted it to electronic ignition and kept running it almost 30 years in all. I finally sold it and believe the buyer is still running it. As Duane(Pa) suggested, they were truly an icon for Stihl.
Glad to help! Dunno if you read the link about my purchase of one last year in memory of my late uncle (its on my sig line too) Sadly the original saw got thrown away. When he gave it to me i was a senior in high school. Have you got yours running yet?
I replaced my 028 with an 026. Id say about the same. I still have my original 026 (thanks to M2theB for his restoration work) and maybe ill do some "side by side" cutting to see.
I don't think there is an oil adjustment for the 028. I have one and do not see anything there like the 034. Maybe dump the oil in tank and put in your own oil. Maybe the guy cut it with something and it's viscosity is too high.
