Considering a used 011 (rear handle, not top) for a limb saw. Not fully happy with the new 170 i recently bought for that purpose.
Anyone own one, have owned/used one?
    Any input appreciated

I have an 011AVT 14" 3/8LP. I'd say it's an ok. saw. It's old - takes maintenance. Parts tend to be high. For ground limbing, I'd rather grab a 36cc non-strato Poulan.
    What's wrong with the MS170?

My 011AVT is worth more than many others.....

I have the 011 AVT as well. 16" 3/8 picco on mine. I like the saw, but it's not easy to get parts for. They make decent power for what they are. Not a daily driver by my standards. What don't you like about the 170?

    Don't like the 170 , well that's kind of a surprise.
I thought that you were happy with it.

Have both the MS170 and Stihl 009L top handle for climbing, limbing, trails, stuck saws. 14" bars w. non safety chains on both.
The 009L is getting old, but when it starts, it's a handy for tight places. Can't fault the MS170 for a small, light, reliable, low powered simple saw like Brad says.
The 170 was designed for women BTW ( comments and flames welcome :emb: ).

Just a bit underpowered IMO. The dealer adjusted the carb before i left and i think they did it wrong. I didnt think it needed any "out of the box"

How many tanks of fuel have you run through it. I find that they loosen up after 5-8 tanks. I found that running big saws then go to a little saw is very disappointing.

The OEM MS170 carb only has IDLE adjustment - No H-L screws. Try turning CW until chain moves and then back off till chain just ticks.

    ^^Best answer!!

Lol. Joking aside, I acquired an 011 avt for free. Co-worker gave it to me. I rehabbed it with a carb kit, fuel line and filter, air filter, plug, and one new rubber mount that was blown. I got it running decent, sold it to him (die hard Still guy). He used it a little, then had me up to re-tune it. Got it good and thought he'd be fine w/ the saw. Couple months later he said he hates the saw and wants to give it back to me to see if I can sell it. So I took it back and tried to give him all the money he paid out for it. Long story short, these saws are a pain in the arse. Air filtration is horrible, period. I ended up re-selling it rather quickly, as is. I think it may have needed a new reed. :makeitrain" I was tired of dickering with it.

I wood not recommend one to anyone I liked... unless they really liked to mess with saws.

Hard to get parts for terrible fuel line routing bad balance there are a lot better limbing saws out there you will get frustrated with that bone soon the 170 stihl is not the best choice either most come with the 043 chain and the bars flex easily throwing the chains especially with a 14 or 16 bar also they are underpowered with the 14 or 16 one customer had me put a 12 on it for him those are the complaints I have heard from owners I had one traded in on a makita 4300 and the customer is much happier but it is a lot more saw than the 170 JB Oh I forgot I use one in the parts shed as a wheel chock for my splitter :D

I have one of the 011avt As far as I'm concerned it is heavy and awkward for the size of the saw. I don't use it.

What would you recommend for a limbing saw? JB Sawman the guy selling the 011 also has a 192 rear handle with a 16" bar.

i knew the 170 was a homeowner saw when i bought it. Its something i wont use a whole lot. Dont cut up full trees too often. Also for smalls. What Stihl would you use/recommend SKEETER McCLUSKEY for limbing?

I have a lot of customer issues with the 192 also lots of running issues oiler issues I have a dozen or so 350 dolmars out and have had good service from them good customer feedback new# is MAKITA EA3500 also I have had good success with the MT 4410 efco saws I have 25 or so of those out and have had very little problems I am not a big stihl fan I think they still make some great products but their quality in there small non pro stuff has really been bad just from the amount of work I have had through the shop but 80 percent of my customer base is homeowner not pros so I see a lot of operator error also that is one reason I like the efco saws they seem to take a lot of that in stride hope that helps JB
