Snagged a used ms 390 the other day, i feel like it was a steal but does require a little work. The saw cranks and runs, needs a chain brake kit, as of now no chain break. And needs a brake handle. Only gave 140, I've only purchased new saws in the past, but everything else looks decent on the 390. What do you guys think?

I usually run the 310 on the smaller stuff but always have the 390 with me for some bigger stuff, love the saw.

You did fine. As long as the piston and cylinder are in good shape the rest of the cosmetic stuff like the chain brake can usually be fixed with cheap, aftermarket parts from the Orient or used OEM parts from the internets. New OEM Stihl parts are hit or miss on pricing, but usually expensive.

Also, that is a highly desirable saw in the resale market, so, in the very unlikely event that you ever want to sell it, you will get your money back and then some. You are definitely in a "no-lose" situation.

I figured i did alright, im not the kind to preserve the appearance of a saw as long its in good running order thats my main concern. We heat our home with wood, i sale a little cord wood as well. As long as it's putting wood on the truck its doing what its made to do. I'll be ordering the parts i need to get it right and should have it put to use in the near future at the wood lot.

I think you did great. I bought an 039 and the chain brake did not work on it. I got lucky and a spring had just popped off. I like the 039/MS390 saws. If you do a muffler mod they cut great.

Lots of used handles out there. I dont have any experience with the AM handles/brake for this series but do use both for 064s/660s. They're decent.

Just buy an Asian one. They're fine and cheap. I've used them.

Thats what i planned on doing, getting a parts list in order now. Also ended up with another project saw, husky 61. Too many irons in the fire at this time. One step at a time.
