I spotted this at Lowe's today, 22 ton, I think the price is way off unless Lowe's could tell the bought and returned date. Any one here running one?
Definitely offer less. I payed $799 for my 27 ton at Menards brand new. Granted that was a clearance sale after Christmas. I'm guessing it was left over stock from the black Friday sales. My buddy got a similar one on black friday this yeat with electric start for $799 or $899. Forest King 30 ton or something if I remember correctly.
They can be bought new for $800. Start at 500. I wouldn't pay more than 550 personally, and I'd want to demo it in the parking lot before buying. Explain the following to the manager: Menards $800 minus 11% rebate =$712 plus tax and it's new. They need to beat that price by $100 at least.
What are they new, $1200 I think? You may find them for $100 of that occasionally. I don't think $800 is bad as long as the unit hasn't been abused. Of course I'd offer less, but I'd still pay $800 for it. I've been using mine for 2 season's now, and my dad and brother in law also use it. So I figure it's split about 18-20 cords so far and it still runs like a champ. The only thing that's broke is the lovejoy coupler. I called DHT and they didn't even ask for a receipt, I just told them I had bought the splitter at Lowe's a year ago and they sent me a new coupler, no questions asked. In my area most used splitters sell for $800+ on Craigslist unless they are some unit that's been pieced together by a homeowner. So $800 for a newist unit and a warranty is hard to beat.
Well, Lowe's didn't take my $600 offer, Lowe's doesn't accept returns for items over 30 days so that gives me an idea of its age. I really want an Iron & Oak 34 or 37 ton.
I wouldn't think they would but you never know unless you try. Even though it's best to get 600 and get it out the door people sometimes get clouded vision because it would be too good of a deal in their minds. They just won't sell it to you even if financially it makes sense. Did they counter offer? After the counter offer I generally ask what is the absolute best price you can give me if I take it right now? If I am fine with paying that price I'll take it, if not then pass and move on.
Pass, why pay new price for a used one. As others have said, Menards had some unreal prices on DHT and Forest Kind for less money for the bigger splitter.
I got one black Friday for 700 or 800 with a mail in rebate, no problems yet and the kohler engine starts right up! Haven't found anything it can't split yet
I have never, ever, told myself that I would have been happier/better off spending less on a cheaper version of any tool I have bought.
I have a 22-ton CountyLine that I bought (manager's special, good price) at a farm store. But, we have two properties and they are 7 miles apart. I went back to the same farm store and the manager had a 35-ton Huskee/CountyLine on sale. I've bought several things from him during the off seasons and he made me a hell of a deal... got it for about the same as the sale price on another 22-ton. Wife thought the beast was overkill. I figured, it will outlast the smaller ones just because it won't be working too hard. Well, I absolutely love the thing. With a couple of addons it will be perfect for how I like to work. It is definitely overkill, but I don't care. I don't have to haul a splitter back and forth, anymore, and I'm glad I spent time shopping around and waiting for the right sale.
