Man, that's a bad break. How bad are the ticks out your way? The way some people have talked they are almost like a plague in warmer areas. I've seen one so far this year.

Yikes! It's not very often you hear of that. I give myself a good once over every night and also make sure that mrs piney does as well. This has been one of the worst years for ticks ive seen in a long time. I've had about 6 bites so far this spring and pulled at least 3 or 4 off me a week.

Hope your buddy has a fast recovery!

Grizz, they are frigging AWEFUL here. From around early/mid March til mid/late June, its really bad along grassy areas and windrows. Get into the brush and you sometimes end up literally COVERED in them......

I honestly don't know.....I saw he was diagnosed, but haven't heard from him. I think a steady diet of Doxycyclene is a one-time treatment, I think that only works once if I'm not mistaken.....

I guess you are lucky that you don't have asparagus growing wild up your way, that day I was texting you while I picked it was the day I found a tick crawling on my leg.

I am going to plant a pile of asaparagus in the garden and along the field next month. I can deal with the ticks, I just don't want my kids/neighborhood kids getting bit by one. My daughter already had Lyme disease two years back, luckily we caught it right away......

Simular story, a friend was just diagnosed with Lyme disease, it started as joint pain to his left knee. Dr knew right away and sent him for tests. I felt kinda bad, I dropped a couple loads of I bucked limbs to his house, that's where he was when he got the little bastard.

I fully expected them to be worse, and the may be, but I haven't been in the woods much since the last trip when I found one.
I've pulled less than ten off me and the dogs, and well before they've had a chance to really grab a good hold.
I check after EVERY excursion outside, not just the end of the day. That's how bad I hate the little bastages.
They usually back off by the end of Junely or so.

Ticks are so small and tough, I've always wondered if they even get taken out by the mower blades or just blown sideways with the grass.

Stinny, I like to think the little bastages get beaten to heck and back when I mow.
Makes me feel better, at least.
I still check, even when just walking across the yard.
The "experts" say they hang out in tall grass, yet a couple years ago while walking across the yard about 20' and then back to the porch, I had one on my leg before I made it back.
The grass in that area wasn't even an inch tall.

I'm sure that every other bug in the grass gets chopped perty good by the blades... but ticks... damm they're tough bugs and so small. Ever since I learned they prolly "ride" on chipmunks and mice as much or more than deer, and they get Lyme from those mice and chipmunks... pretty obvious they can be anywhere the rodents are... and, that's where we are. Gotta love it. I just got back walking Giz along the edge of the woods, on the lawn, thinking I've got no bug dope or Sawyers on... Giz is my defense ... with her tick collar... Kinda takes the enjoyment out a little ya know? Actually pizzes me off that we all even have to think about it...

Yeah, I have whole bunch of mice and chippies around here.
I put out some TP rolls stuffed with Permethrin soaked cotton balls last year. The suggestion was that the mice use those in their nest, the Permethrin gets on them and kills any ticks that get on the mice.
I found cotton in a mouse nest inside the stacks in the shed, so that part worked. I have no idea how many ticks were killed in the process.

The weekend I took the stove back to Woodstock I stayed with a friend near Albany NY and discovered a deer tick already embedded the next day on my thigh. I went ahead and took a course of Doxycycline just in case. I've never seen so many ticks in my life. We spent endless hours playing in the woods around Blair County PA when I was a kid and I don't recall ever seeing a tick back then.
