Well, apparently this black oak rotted out at the base and fell over our fence. It was at least 24" where it crossed the fenceline. Ugh. Had to do some quick temporary fixes to the fence until I can get around to getting the tree off and fence permanently fixed. I'd like to say "at least it's good for firewood" but I'm already 3 lifetimes behind already...

Not bad for having to fix a fence.

BTW, it fell right where we already had a splice in the fence and didn't smash any posts, so once I get the log out of there it should be a very quick fix.

The best kind of fence fix to have! We don’t have any Black Oak here that I’m aware of, what other oak has similar characteristics of black? Thanks!

For me that would feel like a pot of goal fell out of the sky and smushed my mailbox.

Black oak is just a type of red oak. Nothing special. In our woods, the red oaks are mostly northern red, black and a few scarlet. The local white oaks are chestnut and white.
