Signed up for chipdrop back in 2019, and tried using them for a few years and never had success so I stopped. Just other day I got an email about reactivating my request, figured what the hec. Saturday I got an email that I was getting a drop from Big Solar Energy in next 48hrs. Not an hour later I hear a few big trucks pull up. I went to great them and nearly fainted when I saw the size of the logs, these are pretty big . Not a fan of huge rounds they are hard to manipulate but wasn't turning them down. All oak with a little maple mixed in. House shook when they unloaded them. Not good at judging so am not sure how much is there but it will set me up pretty good and needless to say I'll be busy for awhile. Started noodling some to make them manageable. Also going to give the ole wedge and sledgehammer a try as well. Figured best thing to do when they are all manageable is bring the splitter to them and split right there in the street, lol.....My neighbors think I am out of my mind. I'd prefer to get them all around back and split in privacy but hey. I'll get my wife and kids to help throw the splits in the wood trailer and help stack around back.
I signed up for chip drop years ago to. not a peep from them. Maybe I'll get lucky like you just did? Great score!, looks like some metal in that one piece. I'd use an old end of life chain on that/those pieces.
Some big stuff there. As you say, can be a bit to wrangle, but it can be done. Looking at the staining on the one end.. I'd be on the lookout for metal. I presume the first task is to get them off the street.. can't imagine someone not complaining about that. Congrats on the score.
Regarding the metal, the round with the black spots? I am not familiar, are they dangerous? Saturday I was cruising as I just recently sharpened my chain and was cutting like butter. I put a little work in yesterday but I will say I had trouble yesterday even after sharpening.
Where that coloration is, that's an indication there is metal embedded somewhere in that log. It'll kill your chain. Use caution.
It is.... but not because of anyone complaining, am not concerned. People have mulch, stone, dirt, etc... taking up space all the time on the street. I am not taking up much more space then I would if my truck was parked there. With that said I want it off the street just because.......... If they weren't so massive I'd move them asap first and split around back but don't want to double my work load.
Dang it......wonder if I hit something. I noticed my chain being really really dull, but just figured it was all that cutting and oak doing a number on it. I will go after that piece with the sledge and wedge to be safe. Tx
Hard to tell from pic's I know but roughly how much do you think was dropped? Most all logs are around 23" 28" in dia.....
Any round with the dark stains, you can also just leave those alone and don't use a chainsaw if you think it would be dicey to figure out where the metal is. Hitting metal isn't fun and can be costly.
Yep, whenever you see black stains in oak you know there's metal lurking within. Regardless, I wouldn't complain one bit about a score like that dropped off right at your driveway! Much better than the ~2 cords of white pine I got from ChipDrop, that also had metal in them
the real answer is to get it all split and stacked so it is easier to measure. Then you'll really know. I hear you, I am NOT a great estimator of a pile of wood until it is stacked. I've proven that over and over,
Well, I am horrible at the guessing games.. But I'm gonna guess that you should get a bit over a cord out of that.
Indeed.......Yet again this forum proves to be invaluable as being the novice I am I sincerely didn't have any idea what those black spots were. Just thought it was perhaps some sort of disease of such. Of course I hit it........ I knew something was off, after I sliced up those rounds with the black spots my chain was giving all sorts of problems, just wasn't cutting. I figured it was due to heavy use and that hard oak. I have another piece with some staining. Going to try and muck through it with this chain just in case I hit something. I have a newer spare chain I can swap out when I am done with the metal.
