We are putting down flooring next week. Pergo, click/lock, has underlayment attached. The underlayment is a fraction of inch. Can I put a thin felt pad underneath for sound barrier in addition to the pre-attached? Thanks!! Also, planning on using rosin paper for vapor barrier.
Rosin paper as in pink craft paper, or does it have a shiny side? Felted type underlayment should be ok, but if ya can, I would lay out a strip of underlayment and click a swath of planks together and test it out, to be safe. Wouldn't want any extra give that could break the click-lock t & g... Let's see a pic of that flooring if ya got some...
After some discussion tonight, that is WWW's concern, the t & g over 2 layers of underlayment (first is already attached the laminate, and my addition would make it 2. He said we could ruin the t & g dollying heavy items over it, and the sound barrier is for the floor below in apartments, not for our 1 floor ranch house.... This is what I had in mind, but I guess I should not push the limits of cheap laminate.
Yeah, I knew what you were talking about with the underlayment.... Ok, so it's for basement/ 1st floor apts? Will the floor be installed on slab? And do you have a pic of the flooring, or a link?
Floor is going over osb, 1' crawl space underneath. I googled way too long tonight looking for a link. I bought it from PergoOutlet.com, at one point I had it identified as discounted Home Depot model, but that was 2 computers ago and I cannot find it now. Googling on UPC identifications and Home Depot inhouse model #s with no success, it is similar to Pergo XP Kingston Cherry 10 mm Thick x 4-7/8 in. Wide x 47-7/8 in. Length Laminate Flooring (13.1 sq. ft. / case)-LF000338 - The Home Depot Also looking at https://na.pergo.com/pdfs/installation/Installation_Essentials_Guide_072313.pdf
#4. letter F f. Use Pergo SilentStepTM or SoundblocTM Foam or equivalent foam underlayment to absorb sound and to make the floor more comfortable to walk and stand on when the Pergo product that you are using does not have an attached underlayment foam. Do not install Pergo over multiple layers of acoustic underlayment.
I have not seen it, but WWW is a roofer, so I did not ask.....He knows its for a vapor barrier, except the new instructions say vapor barrier only needed over cement slab.
Looks like you got your answer on additional underlayment.... If WWW means tar paper, you can use it, but it typically voids the warranty, at least on the floor I put down a month ago. Y'all will do great!
After living with our floor for 3 years, I'd definately want to have the surface under the floor as solid and flat as possible. We had this put down on the plywood floor and any area where the plywood can move at all, the new flooring will snap and crack at the joints when you walk on it. WWW is right on with no cushy surface/underlayment. I think it would destroy the new floor pretty quick, starting at the joints.
Decision is 6-10 mil visqueen for underlayment, whatever is available. We should be putting the laminate down later this week ( in saying we, I mean he, but I am great at helping.....). Crossing my fingers that WWW does not get pulled into working off the clock during his vacation. No doubt most of us understand how easy it is to do that I will try to take pics
It's snap lock with an alternative tap lock. Guess which one WWW is doing I bet it will be fine either way, and happy to walk on a floor instead of painted subfloor
Poor WWW, he's getting to that age, I can hear his muscles and bones creaking and sore from across the room. Hang in there Honey!!
