Today I have to go to a funeral about 2 hours from home, so I looked up the address on the internet to see what roads I need to take. As the address came up though I got a chuckle out of the road name. Since my wife's name is Katie, naturally taking the "Katie Crotch Road" to get there seemed ironic. I am deeply hoping that since she is from a State away, it was not named after her. She got a laugh out of it too, but that is when I told her, a town away they have a better road name; "Goosepecker Ridge Road". I am not making that up. Its so unique the town has given up trying to sign the road. Every time they put a sign up, it is stolen. The last time it was less than 24 hours later. So those are my two contributions. Any more? Katie Crotch Road: New Portland Maine Goosepecker Ridge Road: Freedom Maine
A month or so ago we were on 77s headed to Tennessee when we found out there was a major delay before the last WV tunnel, so we jumped off 77 and headed SW on a state road. It didn't take too long before I started noticing the side road names, I can't remember any specifically, but there were plenty that I found mildly amusing, and some that weren't that funny except maybe for their lack of creativity, something like "Bobs house road" and "little creek lane". We were on the road for quite some time and had some pretty good chuckles from it all by the end.
There's one named "Greasy Creek Rd." just a few minutes from here, and we know a couple that live on that road. When taking that route to go downstate, I try to avert my eyes........ Quite a few around here with Deer in the name.
Not really a strange name, but a lot of roads near my place in northeast lower Michigan have 'highway' as part of the name. It seems that most every one with that designation is a dirt road shortcut between two main/paved roads. The strangest name that comes to mind in Michigan is Big Beaver Road in Troy. It's hard not to snicker when coming up on that exit sign on I-75.
Red Breast Road, Douglas, GA Boob Creek, Yukon-Koyukuk, AK Butt Lane, Aston, PA Dicks Point Rd, Cutchogue, NY Pussy Creek, Harrison Township, OH ... and then in France they have a nice little village named Pussy.
I grew up on the Beaver Creek in New Hartford, Iowa. They celebrate Beaver days every summer. I now live a mile from 420 St, except the signs now say 42x St because they kept walking off.
Yep had to ask for directions when we got to New Portland today: the road sign for the Katie Crotch Road was stolen (both ends of it)!
I seem to remember seeing somewhere on I95 in Maine an underpass with Cat Mousam Road. Local dirt road is named Breakneck Road, I've also seen: Go Way Nota Road
A few years ago I built a road along my property to go from the main road, back to some distant fields and then up through the woods. Its pretty long at about a half mile in length. Anyway I was going to name it something fancy like Ewe Lane or something corny like that, but the wife just said "name it what everyone calls it". So someday I need to get it officially put on the maps and enhanced 911 system: "Road to Nowhere". That literally what everyone calls it.
Somewhere in Minnesota I came across a housing development where every street name was part of the Periodic Table. I thought that was creative.
Topinabee. It's actually Topinabee mail route road near Topinabee, MI. We used to live near Lover's Lane. It was always called that until the County went and named it something else. It is a mile long and no homes. Convenient!
Not a road, but here in Menomonie, there's lake menomin, on a peninsula that juts out there is a cemetery, and the bay between the cemetery and mainland is conveniently called butchers bay, needless to say, I don't buy a whole lot of meat around here......
We also have several Greasy Creek Roads here in Missouri I grew up not to far from Greasy Creek and spent a lot of time on it in my teen years.
After a long battle with the neighbors over a right of way, a friend of mine had to make a new road in to his house. He promptly named his new road... Notchur Lane...
Purgatory Road is in Mont Vernon - who wants to live on that? I'll get there fast enough. Used to drive by a property that was named Half-Fast Farm. They took that sign down a couple of years ago though. Don't know if there were complaints or if the place was sold.
