I grew up in Northern Maine so we used the Swap Buy Sell Guide, but still have seen Uncle Henry's too. I saw on the TV a few days ago they are making a TV show on about it. I didn't catch the name or channel. I think TLC, History, Discovery, something like that. Anyone? Downeast Deals? It was Downeast something.
If anyone cares (I guess not given no posts?) I contacted Uncle Henry's and the show is called Down East Dickering and will be on the History Channel after a show called American Pickers starting April 2. There's another show playing about Eel/elver fishing, Cold River Cash, anyone see that one? I didn't even know eels lived in Maine, much less the price they bring in. It's on Animal Planet.
I've seen Cold River Cash, it's just OK, like many of the "reality" shows I was more interested in how they do it than the artificial drama the TV producers introduce. There is a big controversy right now in Maine about elver (glass eel) fishing and the licensing, seems the Native American tribes don't think they have to follow the same rules as the rest of the state and issue their own licenses, with no limit or that's my take on the situation. I saw a promo about the Uncle Henry's show the other day, will give it a watch. There are some real characters Downeast, the heart of Uncle Henry's country.
It's not that I'm not interested, I read the original post and have no clue what you were talking about. Still don't. Who is uncle Henry? My truck is named Henry.
People from Maine, New Hampshire, maybe Mass know. It's a weekly book with classified ads. Pretty much what Craig's List is but without Internet. Your truck has a name??? That's really odd!
There is an on line version of Uncle Henry's, but to get the full flavor you need to see it in its original glory as a weekly booklet sold at every convenience store counter in the state. I'm not sure how long it's been around, but I can't remember not having an Uncle Henry's on the back of the toilet. I believe the show is pitching the idea of the old fashioned "art of the deal" emphasizing the face to face personal interaction between the sellers or traders, instead of an internet interaction, which could be interesting with the type of characters you run into in Downeast Maine.
