Cut another load at my "Friday the 13th" score. Bucked the biggest log there. Im now thinking this is cottonwood and not tulip (yellow) poplar. Ive only scrounged a small amount of TP in the past and have not willingly taken any cottonwood. Didnt have the yellowish/green heartwood. Your thoughts/imput FHC?
The “berries” are actually catkins like oaks have. Also the serrated leaves are typical of cottonwood.
Catkins was the word i couldnt think of (old age) Pretty sure they came from that tree as all the limbs were ground up and those were under the mound.
I’ve only “scored” cottonwood once, right after Isaias and burned it the following spring. So for me 7 months did the trick.
Thanks Eric. I feel like a real dummy for not realizing this isnt TP. Well i can now say ive scored some. Same spot where the elm and sycamore are too. Updating the other thread with more pics now
FWIW I don’t think your customers will notice a difference burning cottonwood vs. tulip poplar. At least I didn’t notice a difference. If anything cottonwood left less chunks the next day, compared to tulip.
Liriodendron tulipifera removes all doubt and is what I have everywhere. I don’t like the tree and will eventually thin them out and see if anyone wants to pay me to take the highly valuable logs.
Funny that’s exactly what happened to me too. I saw a spot alongside route 9 with a couple blowdowns. Marshy area, cattails and tall grass. Elms and tulip poplars along the wood line. Some logs were hastily cut by the state and piled up on the bank. I grabbed it thinking it was TP. After processing with the bark peeling off, noticed it STUNK
Tulip tree. My thinking thats what this was. My landlord wants to cut down a couple huge ones just into the woods near out place. One i could fell into the woods, but the other no. Do you process much of it?
I have to laugh when I’m in Home Depot passing by the poplar boards. They sell for a small fortune. Those trees do make good lumber for the right application. I have a fairly large TP in my backyard that’s straight as an arrow. Other than the sticky mess that comes down for a couple weeks a year I don’t mind the trees.
No, it’s pretty well known around here for being a low btu firewood. Selling poplar is a good way to not get call backs
There was one shorter smaller log i was putting aside for the mill. Wonder what cottonwood stock comes out like? Could always give it a try. Yeah TP does make some nice stock to work with. they do grow nice and straight. It was poplar (pun intended) for a while back in the 90's at the local lumberyard.
I know cottonwood has been milled before by somebody out there. Probably just a boring looking grain. I’ll bet it takes paint or stain well though.
