Another vote for hickree. Nice that it's laying down already, just begging to be cut

Some of the most bar grabbing stuff I've ever cut. "oh the pressure is on the other side" "wait, no..." :picard:

Does smell good and burns real nice.

There are a few small hickory trees locally.

I've not had a chance to cut/split any.

Wow, thanks folks. I may argue on its health though LOL. It has been lying on the side of the trail for many years. You can see the suckers that sprouted are fairly large now and the trunk still seems solid. Poor thing is suffering, it’s only right someone puts it out of its misery.
Before this tree went down there were two huge oaks behind it on their side. Gone, can’t even find remnants of the branches just looking from the trail. Someone must have cut them out but cleaned up well.

I never have as much trouble sticking my bar as I do with hickory. Start with a topcut on a horizontal log, kerf starts to close, switch to undercut cut... kerf is also closing? LOL

No real rush, it is living in that position and not going anywhere. Time to load the wood in the basements and then begin selling some cordage. That’ll keep me busy for awhile. I just didn’t know what it was. Now that I do it’s on the list. As the deer hunters roam my woodlot I’m looking for things to do elsewhere.
