Anyone care to offer up an ID, the pod in my hand appears to be what is in the top of the tree.

I was thinking the same. Never have seen one other than FHC pics.

I've got a monster Kentucky Coffee that my great-grandfather planted as a specimen tree. Right beside the house. And huge. Fear about it falling has caused more than enough heartburn.

But anyway, the pods I get and bark looks like that.

Thank you, I have never seen one around here. It can either be the victim of my chainsaw or a dozer. What’s the btu/firewood value ?

About the same as cherry based on the FHC chart.

Yep, that’s a Kentucky Coffee Tree. If you cut a twig, you’ll find the pith to be salmon colored.

Yep... Coffee tree... If you rub the beans against a curb and touch the skin it'll be very hot.... and in a sling shot it hurts... :D ... Youth taught me that...

The KC trees I’ve cut are tight grained and require more than 2 years to dry in my climate. Makes perfect straight edge splits. That’s a big one and the wood is beautiful. Might be worth milling if you’re in to lumber.

I just stopped the folks place & said something to mother about it, she said it probably was. Apparently where her grandparents lived about 30 miles east of here there were several Kentucky Coffee trees. My grandmother was big on planting trees so it’s likely she brought some pods over to grow.
There is a small bunch of trees on the same farm as the one I showed, I never paid much attention; I just thought they were Black Locust but mother said she was pretty sure the are Kentucky Coffee trees.

I have never spent any amount of time on this farm & if the trees were discussed when I was younger I probably wasn’t paying attention.

There will usually be a group from germinating seeds. Here’s the pile I got this week.

Coffee tree bark always throws me off, I feel like it varies quite a bit. The pods though are what make it pretty distinct. More banana shaped than say honey locust.
