Was this located near you Steve? Was there a twig close enough to snap or see if it was green like a sassafras? Could it possibly be a sassy with no lobed leaves? We have a sapling on the edge of our woods that has all three leaf shapes. Ill snap a pic tomorrow.
Bark and gnarly growth are very reminiscent of sassafras despite the leaves.

Thanks everyone! This was in CT, if I didn’t see the leaves I’d have to say sassafras, so I think that’s the verdict.

Ctwoodtick heres the pics from the sassy All three leaf shapes. I wonder if its possible to have just one leaf shape on a tree? I see the blue blaze trail marker on the tree nearby. If you hike that way again, see if there are any. IMG_2666.JPG IMG_2667.JPG
