Tree id please plus some elm

    Hey yall I decided to go back to my neighbors and get the rest of the elm I left from my post the other day. Anyway after I grabbed the rest of the elm (pictures soon) I saw this blow down and was wondering what wood it is and if it’s any good any help is appreciated thank yall [​IMG]

    That’s what I was hoping it was since I cut into it and saw the color definitely happy now

    Im seeing black birch. If fresh, snap a twig and sniff it. Has a wintergreen scent. Great firewood too. End grain pics of the bucked rounds would confirm.

    Either way still a great find. :thumbs:

    Not fresh so not able to smell it but the camera doesn’t do these rounds justice the color is like a peach colorish

    Huh, I was wrong! Must be cherry then as birch rots fast and is usually punky throughout. Has a short shelf life once down/dead. The cherry should still have a faint aroma. Cherry heartwood is very rot resistant.

    I saw that at first glance too and had to really think about it. By bark ID alone, black birch won't get that curled plated appearance until it's a much larger DBH. Cherry on the other hand gets rough at a much younger age.

    The best thing you can do to start learning about the woods you are cutting is to try to look it up and come up with an I d then post and see how close you are and if you are wrong ask how the guys came to the conclusion of what you have

    Studied it for a while myself before settling on birch. Good thing it wasn't final Jeopardy.:rofl: :lol:

    Well I officially got all this cherry split will have pictures of it stacked shortly. I wish I could get more of this cherry it split like a dream.[​IMG]
