Google said elm or Osage orange. I am 98% sure it isn’t elm. Another to start on this or a smaller pecan- depending on what this is. More wood in it than the other pecan. Thoughts ?
My app is very unreliable with just bark. I’d think an Osage would have “apples” laying on the ground you’d be able to see. Second bark pic said;
I was leaning towards black cherry myself, based on that burnt cornflake looking bark. Cut it open and see what’s inside
Hmmm. I could almost believe cherry actually. Didn’t think of it as there isn’t much around here. Juts loaded the pecan but will go cut a couple pieces, will know ricky tick of its cherry by the smell.
I’d be curious too… I know it’s not Hedge…. The bark is off for Hackberry…but was one of my initial thoughts… not sure on black cherry.. but plausible…. Can you get a better picture of the leaves? They appear to have that elongated leaf…
Definitely not cherry. Must be hackberry. No leaves , been down a year. All hack I have ever seen has the ball like parts of the bark. None on this one. Maybe a type of maple ? Seems soft ….
Looks kinda dark for Hackberry. I was thinking your in the same region as me and we have very few Osage Orange that gets that big. Plus like WW said no apples laying around.
No osage around here and im not seeing cherry. Kinda stumped. Slice it open MKD EDIT: i see you cut it open and im clueless.
Definitely isn’t pecan, smell wasn’t distinctive of anything I am familiar with. I am still leaning towards some sort of soft wood or maple. I cut a tree last year that was also dead and it was I believe the same thing , also found close proximity to a body of water like this one. Never fully figured out what it was but it was very soft and match light stuff. Went to the outdoor pit. I will probably go ahead and get some of this tree and at least split it to see if it is the same stuff.
don’t believe so. Will know when I split some tho for sure. If it is a grand total of 1 piece will get split…..
It for sure isn't hackberry or hedge. If it is black cherry it's a little strange looking. My guess, and this is a guess, is some sort of gum.
