Hoping to get a little help on these, have access to a huge wood lot of a guy that does tree removal. Trying to get a solid rotation for years to come, located in central KY. My old man says the best burning hardwood is free wood, have my ideas on these but looking for confirmations. The first 3 pics are the same round, just w/ bark and then split. Having a hard time telling between possible boxelder or red oak, pretty heavy, any tips appreciated!! Last round ash I think? Glad to be a part of the group and appreciate any help! Second and third look to be cherry. Maybe the first one too but its hard to tell with just end grain. Last one might be ash but it could be tulip poplar. Welcome to the club by the way.
Another vote for cherry. The lighter colored outer sapwood ring looks a bit large for black cherry, but the bark looks like it. It’s definitely some variety of cherry. The last picture with the vine on the round is tulip poplar. The bark can strongly resemble ash, but on ash there’s a tiny pin hole in the center pith, which is absent in your picture.
First log is cherry and i agree with Eric on the tulip (yellow) poplar. The cherry will have a faint cherry smell when sniffed. And yes he was right. Free wood is the best. Welcome to the FHC Senjames
I agree with the previous posts, 1-3 ( since its all from the same piece ) Cherry. Pic 4 is most likely poplar but a picture of a split would help as well. No pith hole in the center makes Ash unlikely.
2-3 are black cherry like mentioned. I think number 4 is still Ash. Tulip poplar is usually green in the middle. A view from 90° to the bark would be better though
True on the tulip being slightly green. Greenest I've seen tho was sassafras. That last pic looks like it has that white powdery stuff in the furrows of tulip?
Thanks for the welcome y’all, was checking out the section on tree id on a seperate post good stuff and that’s what I’m here for to learn, here is a picture of a split from the possible tulip/ ash, def has a tint of green inside as someone mentioned not sure it comes through on the picture, not a strong smell at all no stink for aroma really. Figure I’ll mix it all in with some hickory I got for free from a buddies back yard, and skate by with no heating bill again this year Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
