They sure are handy , here's a skid row , the tractor is at the end of the row . We cut that last winter , all blow downs or dead standing .
I don't have a winch yet but do use the tractor as far as I can get it in the forest. Nice looking machines you have neighbour.
We've got 2 , a little Norse 180 and an Igland 4001 (Both are Igland) . I've had the Norse for about 4 years , bought it used for 800$ , it's drug out polly 20 cord so if you come across a deal on one but think it's too small , don't hesitate , worth every penny .

I would love to have one but not high on the priority list (money list) right now. I found one on Kijiji about a month ago for $1000 but the cash had to be allocate elsewhere. No hurry as we have lots of trails to cut so should keep us in Wood for a few years without one. Thanks for sharing the pics and inspiring me to bump it up the list fuelrod that is freakin impressive but probably costs more than my tractor. It would take a few lifetimes to get my money back skidding a few cords a year
I built it, the winch and grapple/rotator cost me a little more than buying a regular winch, so it was not that expensive and was a good winter project in the shop, wood heated of course . See how things go in a circle?
Awesome setup ! I sure could use that grapple on this houselot I'm clearing for the wood , I've got a ton of wood . Where did you get the tailhook on the winch line ?
That and all the sliders were from Hud-son in NY. Hard to find on their website, but dig around in "parts". It is a "wedge lock" style that does not require cable clamps.
The wedge lock is what I'm looking for , how well does it hold up from the slides beating on it ? I always end up with the cableclamps being jammed to the end from the slides .
Winching can be okay and sometimes even necessary but unless you have snow to drag the logs on I really do not like dragging them.
I have a Norse 350, and I cannot say enough good about it. I also bought a large grapple that was for a skid steer and modified got the JD quick hitch. The winch is an absolute time and headache saver.
Me either Dennis, so I made the butt plate swing up to catch the but end of a log to keep it off the ground. It's hard enough to keep your trails from getting all rutted up.
Here's a couple of recycled pics. First one is my daughter helping out one day a few years ago. Last pic was from this Spring. We didn't get any more snow after that pic, so those logs were cut there this summer and hauled to the splitting area on a trailer.
