Inspect and clean your fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and CO detectors. Clean your detectors out with compressed air, replace batteries and check for proper operation. Check your extinguishers to make sure they are properly charged, and keep them in an easy to access location where everyone knows how to get them AND use them. Go over a fire escape plan with your entire family and even practice it a time or two. None of what we do here matters a bit above the lives of you and your loved ones, we want everyone to stay safe! We are a wood burning family, pass the word to your friends and loved ones to do the same, even if they don't burn wood.....

Excellent advice Scotty, thanks! (You might want to expand the title and pin this, as we all need this reminder on a regular basis.)

    Thanks Scott.
Just replaced the battery a few days ago, and took a look at the extinguisher too.
It's still got a gooder charge.
We're ready over here in the mitten.

We do the smoke detectors every New Year's Eve. I'm buying a new larger extinguisher this season, as soon as I get the new stove installed and running.

The GF thinks the extinguishers should be stuck in the back of some pantry - completely inaccessible:emb:. We agreed to a spot in the laundry room for one.
We had a cooking stove fire 7-8years ago I'm glad the extinguisher was at my disposal that day

We have 3 extinguishers and all are gooder to go. One by the stove in the basement, one on the main floor and one in the shop. We do the battery swaps with the detectors every 6 months, with the daylight savings as a reminder. Lately, I've been checking every outlet in areas you can't see... to be sure all is OK.

I will have a talk with my honey about a plan, should a fire start at night. Good advice Scott!

No, you have wood to move or process. Take your pick.

Just a reminder to go along with this great thread: Don't have your extinguishers too close to the heat source.....it won't do you any good if you can't get close enough to use it due to the heat and flames.

Jack, me neither til I read about the air cleaning trick. When we gutted and remodeled the house we hard wired our smoke detectors and when they get dirty from dust and what not, they will give us a friendly little reminder and GO OFF....lol

And it usually happens in the middle of the night!!!

Last house had hard wired units that were outdated. Get a bug in em, or dust, and they'd start chirping in the middle of the night... :hair: When I found out what a hassle and cost it was going to be to replace them with the newest version... I pulled all of them and replaced them with the standard battery units. Maybe 1/4 the cost. End of false alarms.
