Anyone here have experience with retread tires? they were real hot during the late 60's and early 70's but then faded out.
Just ordered four for the old rustbucket from Treadwright. They are a fantastic price with free shipping (on certain tires) that I couldn't pass up. All local shops and internet sources were too expensive for what I was looking for.

Everyone thinks that truck tires that are blown alongside the road were retread. Actually 70% of the blowouts are on virgin tires.

The retreading process has really improved in the last 5 years. A lot of commercial operators run them.
Personally, I would run them on the rears but not the steer axles. They are more sensitive to proper inflation pressures and excessive heat build-up, especially from over loading.

I just replaced the 4 rear tires (20") on my F700 (22,500 GVW) with retreads. I knew I had to replace them this year so I started shopping around back in May. For brand new, I was going to be looking at $1700+. One of the places I went was a place in the Carlisle, Pa area. Basically the same price as every place else I checked. The fellow I talked to asked how many miles I put on the truck in a year. When I told him 6,000-7,000 he suggested retreads. They actually do it right there in their shop. I decided to go for it. It came to just shy of $1,000. I don't know about longevity but they have a good, deep tread and seem to ride as well as any new tires I've ever driven on.

I'll try to remember to take a pic of them tomorrow.

I love my guard dogs. They are loud but i drive a 7.3 so they are barely audible above the engine noise as ling as the windows are up. Cant beat em for the price IMO especially with the free shipping.

Been running caps for 15 + years.
Only had a couple issues. Changed tire dealer and no problems since.
Started running this winter combo 2 years ago on my tri axles . They shoulda named these Winter Deep NGS (never get stuck). Great tires.

I have used the treadwright products on a couple trucks, The set on my 250 are theirs right now, these were gotten just before the move. Sentinels, about 20k on them don't know why but these are not holding up as well as previous products from them. Hopeful whatever issue there was has been corrected. Unfortunately with out the free shipping to me I can get other tires new for about the same total cost wise. I have in the past recommended them - just don't know about this set.

Due to the low presence of siping in the gaurd dog model, I elected to get the warden. I don't use my truck much but I do need the siping for better traction in the snow and on snow covered/packed roads.
I too am satisfied with the reviews of their product. I mainly look at two areas when reading reviews. The "negative" reviews and the "customer service/warranty" reviews. These are the type of reviews you really learn from!
One review in particular was from a fella that said he had influenced many people to buy this product and was withdrawing his support. It seems that the retreads had a greater tendency to fail/blow out at interstate speeds due to excessive heat build up and then breakdown of the bonding agent for the re-cap. He also said that the tire would still be fine if you can avoid high speeds for extended times...I think that fits my ol'rustbucket F-150 to a "T"!

A longgggggggggg time ago we bought a new set of recaps for snow tires annually. Then when I had a fleet of trucks to take care of we bought recaps for all the duals. Only ran new tires on the front of the trucks. It saved us a ton of dollars over the years.

mine get into a little mud and they perform way better than the previous BFG A/Ts and nitto terra grapplers. i will say however that the terra grapplers were amazing on packed snow and ice. and as a matter of fact, BFGs suffered tread seperation...

I looked into these for my truck after I saw this post. I can't find anything in my size with free shipping. Their site says the cheapest shipping is $30.42 each tire via FedEx. Unfortunately that prices their tires in the same ballpark as what I'd pay for four new tires for from the local tire shop.

DexterDay is running those gaurddog (i think) from Treadwright on his F150. Think he has had them over a year and everything on here I have read he loves them. Let's see if he drops in to give us an update on them.

Id buy a set if they were available in the size for my old truck but my tires on it still have plenty of tread now.

Yep. This March will be a year. Although the old girl doesn't see a lot of miles every year, she still gets her workout in :)

I found these tires to be fairly quiet. At least compared to the Pro comp Xtreme AT's. They still make some highway hum, but it's not terrible compared to others mud tires

The best part is the price.. I had to pay $20 something for shipping on each tire. But I was just around $800 delivered to my door :) For a set of 35" A/T's? That's an amazing price!! My last 2 sets cost $1,200 + for a set of 4.

They showed up today! Only 6 days-not bad. They are 10 ply and all four are Michelin carcasses. Only thing is I have to wait till Wed for an open appt.

I had also found this site while looking for retreads. https://www.tirerecappers.com/ They are a bit less expensive, but I elected to go with treadwright due to the reviews I've read. Mainly, the customer service reviews.

I had a 3:00 appt. for the tires to be mounted yesterday. I got home at 6:00! only one guy there and he kept getting interrupted. But, $60 later, including disposal, they are on the truck. I drove the2 miles home without paying attention to them at all. The roads here are now hard-packed and snow covered. The secondary roads are the same but with ruts in the snow that are now frozen. (We need a good clean-up for the roads)
Anyway, all told, I have "new" 10-ply tires for the truck at a cost of $520. I figured I saved at least 300.
I did check into buying used tires locally and got one price of $250 installed for 4...double that for new and two year guarantee, now ya know.
As far as mounting and balancing them goes, there was one tire that took about 6 oz of weight on each the inside and outside of the rim! The other three were not as bad.
