Trimmed an oak tree in the yard, thought I could help it to grow taller than wider.
The top had fallen out (co-dominate) turns out I didn't kill it like I thought. So what can I do to make sure it grows nice, strong and disease free? IMG20220528160437.jpg IMG20220528160447.jpg IMG20220528160454.jpg

Trim branches in such a manner that the bark eventually grows over the cut to minimize decay.
Other than that, let it be a tree ?

An Oak growing in the open will naturally grow a wide canopy because of sun exposure and room to expand. It’s not competing for sunlight, so it doesn’t have to go up to get light.
I’d kill all the weeds around it with glyphosate and mulch it at least as wide as the canopy. If Asplundh or other utility clearance crew is in the area ask for a chip dump. Mulch it with chips every year. Leave the leaves under it. Add your other leaves. Basically you’re just mimicking what happens in the forest. Make conditions perfect for mycorrhizae and watch it grow. If you can avoid driving on the critical root zone that will help it also.

I was told to cut about an inch away, I did it when dormant but that's what I'm thinking, let it do it's thing

I've heard compaction on the roots is bad, doing my best to keep it that way.

That's another oak under it too, cut it down last year cause they were competing, now I need to treat it with maybe glyphosate? Hate to use Tordon.

You can cut it and paint concentrated glyphosate on the stump.

Perhaps you should feel the same about glyphosate?

Perhaps, you think it'll be absorbed by this tree?

I doubt you would notice but the stuff has proven to not be as safe as most think it is, including the maker of it. One more cancer causing spray.
