    Which side is up?
I bought natural slate tile for my hearth from Vermont Slate Depot - Home.
The tile on the left has been milled smooth. The one on the right is rough and more natural.

Both sides have their plus and minus. I believe I prefer the rough side on the right a little more.
Which side did the manufacturer intend to be up? I presently have the smooth side laid out as up, thinking the roughness would aid in mortar adherence.
Plan on setting in the morning.

Thanks. I like the looks of rough up, but was concerned about adherence.
Rough side up is how I remember grandma's floors.

Cleft is up. Mine have been stuck down for years and solid as the day they were put in.

How is the quality of the tiles?

Quality wise I shouldn't speak on it yet.
On initial lay out it appears that a few of the tiles have a squareness problem. Bare in mind I haven't applied the square to them yet.
We had a little problem with shipping. Not Vermont Tile's problem but the shipping company's problem. The shipping company said, "The address I gave them was in Cardington." Cardington is about 15 mins. south of me.
Since the business that I was having it shipped to was located on a corner lot, I gave them the other address. It came back closer. Fulton about 10 min drive.
Told the tile company to forget the order. After a little thought, called them back and told them to ship Terminal Pick Up. About 45 minutes one way drive and an additional $25.
Product wise. Six weeks to ship. I am very pleased with the product though.
You may have been who I spoke with.
