So about twenty 1 1/2 inch tiles in my shower came loose. I took them out, cleaned the floors and tile, dried floor for several days, thin set the floor, set tiles, let dry for several days grouted, dried before use. Everything looked great when finished, but within a week the grout was coming loose and the tiles quickly came back out. I did the hole proceed a second time, but let dry longer, and the same thing happened. Will a primer (like TEC multipurpose primer) get the tile to stick? If so should I apply the primer to the floor and the tile before thin-set, or just the floor ? thanks
How long were the tiles there originally? Were they sealed? Water could be seeping through. Check the sub floor. Even the slightest movement will break the seal. They make an additive to mix with the thin set and grout. It's a type of liquid silicone. It used to be called Mastik, but it's been a while since I did tile work.
Floor is 9.5 years old. The first time I redid it I used a premixed thin set which I now realize is not waterproof. I went with a waterproof not premixed thin set this time and am going to set the tile’s tomorrow. I think I will put on a sealer after I grout it and let it dry. Thanks BHags !
