Lots of old stumps around this area have springboard slots in them as they usually cut the stumps pretty high.

Kind of hard to hide the evidence when you screw up the back cut.

I'm very happy chain saws were invented before I started felling trees.

In my younger days I would compete with a single buck saw at some local venues and that was enough of hand sawing for me those men were a different breed of tough JB

I’m always surprised how slender the guys are in those pics. Sure they are burning tons of calories, but I’d think they would build more muscle mass. Guessing they didn’t have the best nutrition available?

I imagine they were like jerky all muscle because from what I have read those lumber camps did a pretty good job feeding them

Can’t imagine how many calories they’d need to consume to keep up with their activity level? 4000-5000?

I know I get really hungry after a day off CSS!

There would be a big endurance aspect to working like that all day. Big muscle mass and stamina don't go together.
In the book "Deadfall" the author talks a bit about how well-fed workers were in the early western Washington logging camps.
