Made a delivery last Sunday. Went to scout a couple spots close by where ive scored Asplundh cuttings in the last couple months. (threads with similar titles). Bingo...sugar maple. Been fighting a cold for the last several days so wasnt up to it earlier in the week and this wasnt my planned cut for the week either. IMG_2448.JPG IMG_2449.JPG IMG_2450.JPG IMG_2452.JPG IMG_2451.JPG IMG_2453.JPG Im ready to leave and i hear a tractor coming down the road. Neighbor came to grab some logs. Helped him roll them closer to the street so he could scoop them up with his grapple. Used the cant hook. He had never seen one before. We had a nice chat about firewood and i directed traffic for him too. I introduced myself and we chuckled as his name was "Birch"! Not making that up either.
Few logs left up top. He made four trips and was done. IMG_2456.JPG IMG_2458.JPG IMG_2460.JPG IMG_2461.JPG More wood farther down i may go grab this week. Couple others scores i wanna get back to first.

Nice job on the sugar maple and helping the neighbor there. Sounds like a fun, successful day of hoarding

Brad, do you ever have issues with whoever owns the land where these trees are? Or how do you get these logs without any issue? In Wyoming, I see downed trees along the road but never know who actually owns the land. You're more likely to be confronted with a gun out here.

It was cool. Really nice guy. He was grouping logs to grab a bunch at a time. Talk about easy. We surveyed the bigger logs and thats when i got the cant. Fun to watch.

Now if i can only convince buzz-saw to zip around North Haven with his tractor scrounging logs!

Ive talked to numerous Asplundh crews including field bosses. Asplundh is supposed to get an authorization (signed paperwork) from a homeowner to work on/near their property. If the homeowner wants the wood they are told to put up a sign "keeping wood". Local and state police have told me any roadside wood is free game if left there. SOP procedure if trees being trimmed/removed roadside. If the wood is farther off the road and/or i need to park in someones driveway or yard, i always get permission.
Asplundh is responsible for removing any logs, but they only have a few trucks to cover large territories. Can be a day later of many months. Same holds true for other contracted trees companies. Ive seen it gone in less than a day.

I kinda felt bad but the guy said no worries. Not the first time ive helped a fellow scrounger roadside.

Good to know. We had Lewis tree in Shelton last year, but I never was able to talk to anyone. And I had a few other scroungers beat me to the piles

I talked to the boss of the tree service that had Wallingford's tree contract. He told me the tree service is responsible for taking the wood and gave me the okay to take it.

damm you are good. Yes I made it years ago.

I have three other Log Rite hooks , so I decided to pass it along to BRAD.
How many Cant Hooks can one guy possibly use.
Better it be used than sit in the corner collecting dust and cob-webs!

:D ... bread crumbs... :smoke: ... But seriously, I'd like to know more about how you did that? Whats it made out of? Stainless steel? I know you have tools and the know how and the talent.

It is a piece of aluminum tube with a plug I turned down on the lathe for the hook end that is welded in and a cap welded on the end. Hook is two pieces welded together since I couldn't get the bend correct if it was one piece.
The geometry of the hook is not perfect but close. When I made it I just took a guess at it. Kind of surprised that it is actually really close to the Log-Rite hooks.

Maybe BRAD can post a couple detailed pictures.

Things like this happen when I have a slow day at work.

And the winter we are having it will most likely stay that way.
Instead of spending money on a blower he should have bought mud tires.

That’s some nice straight maple there Brad. Nice score. You didn’t ask about tractor rentals?

That's a "sweet" score. Guess we both had the Ford's working hard.

Nice score Brad! Asplundh was on our street Friday doing limbing work. Nothing worth taking; and they chipped it all.

They left a door hanger on our front door a month or two ago which we had to sign to give permission. That’s good to know homeowners can elect to keep wood if wanted. And also good to know the rules regarding roadside wood.
