I suppose that could be some older black birch. With advancing age, the bark becomes scaly and plated. My first thought was that it was not birch though.
I saw those pieces too. Im starting to think it is birch. I saw pics on other sites and the bark of a mature river birch looks like the larger rounds. Some call it black birch but of course there are different opinions if its the same tree. Black birch has decent BTU. Trying to figure out if its worth the effort. Price is right.
Yeah it might be. I’m only familiar with white and yellow birch. The little pieces I circled look like white birch, but the larger ones arent
I think it is. Not sure of the variety though. Older yellow birch??? If its free and close, go get it ASAP! At least check it out!
Love birch, I wonder if you can test it out if it has that tinder-catch bark which burns like a candle. I don’t know if it does that at that age but worth a shot? I had some white that was pretty scaled at the base, turns a black and grey with ridges. Hopefully it is so. It’s some of the cleanest wood I’ve burned, doesn’t attract a lot of dirt or the like in the bark.
I’ve got lots of black Birch. Mostly younger but some old ones too. Never seen bark change that much. Maybe some other variety’s as others have said.
I look around from time to time online for a book to teach me the different kinds of wood. I guess I should take a walk down to the local library and get off the internet for a bit to see what they have there, because otherwise, I have absolutely no idea what kinds of trees are what. I'm broadly familiar with 2 types of wood though.... Wet and Dry.
The Wet has my vote here. Up on its ends like that those rounds are drinking up plenty of water. Good score though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
