I was wondering if would help, or should I just continue on my old "limping blaze king"? Is slammer a term used here? how about the term heatform?
You mean an insert type installation though, right? An insert that's not installed to code, or possibly with nothing but the existing masonary
Yes, an insert into an existing fireplace. Mine had masonry chimney with a metal shroud for the fireplace. Definately not up to code anymore.
"Slammers" were very popular in the 1970s after the first oil crisis. People tried to cut down on heating costs by using their fireplaces. They found they used more oil with an open fireplace so they bought "easy to install" inserts. You just had to slam these inserts into the open fireplace. If slammed in properly the surround of the insert sealed the fireplace opening so all the air drawn up the flue was forced through the insert. There were a number of problems with these units such as the seal never seemed to work, they did not burn cleanly, and the 8"x13" fireplace flue was too big for them. All this led to a lot of creosote and a big increase in flue fires. If installed and burned correctly, and the flue swept regularly, they were safe and much more efficient than an open fireplace. I know, my parents burned one for 20+ years without a problem. The problem was too many people never read past the "easy to install" part of the documentation. They are definitely no longer up to code. KaptJaq
Should I start a new thread on my slammer rehab, or continue my older BK thread? PS, mine is one of the not maintained type.
You will find people that are interested in both topics. If you have the time, do both. If there are constraints it is your choice... KaptJaq
WW, you could always keep this thread going and continue your new posts and pics. Or the mods might have you start a new one. It's a toss up. Seen any stray goats lately?
Just curious why were talking about at loves and slammer installs in the site suggestion and support forum? I thought this was for technical issues?
She was asking if she should start a thread. You are right though Clem, no one needs to ask permisssion to start a new thread.
I was thinking maybe she thinks cause its technical stuff about an install?? Then I figured out she was asking a question. Yep no stupid questions.
The new tactic is typing a post and hitting submit to early. (I then have to go back and edit for spelling half the time) then start a new post to finish the thought or to add something. Seriously I dont purposefully do that though!
Spell check and proof reading before you hit post would do a world of good. Most of my posts come from my phone as well.
