The first 2 pictures were taken last December. It was a bit chilly that day as temperature was in the teens but no snow. That came the next day. This is a neighbor's property and they wanted those pines gone! We ended up taking most of the pine and some ash too.

Once again, thanks go to Pallet Pete, Amateur Cutter and Wishlist. They did all the work that day because my body was protesting. But these guys go the trees down and then the nasty work was left for me. It got nasty too because we got snow and then after about a week, we had ice. That ice did not leave until March.

    Now the real work begins....

So now we can see what the place looks like today. Big change indeed. (It was not quite so cold for taking pictures today. We hit 73 today!)

Yes it is Dave. They've been doing some nice work on the place. Even have a nice pond too.

Nice when you can open up more light and space for the garden

I burn pine during the shoulder season. Wife loves it because it is so light to move and lights really quick.

I like it because I can get it cut, split, and delivered for $50 a cord.

I need a better camera so I can get some good before and after pics of my garden. Well, hopefully I'll get to the point where there's after pics..

I have a pretty thick grove of red pines. Never would have considered burning it before I came here. It's supposed to have about the same btus as silver maple, according to a few charts I've looked at. I have my eye on a couple standing dead ones - hopefully the sap mess won't be as bad?

Shouldn't be as bad as cutting green. Depending on how dead they are - if they are still holding needles there will be sap. If they're starting to lose some bark it will be minimal sap

The ones I was looking at still have bark, and a few needles up top. Perhaps I'll give them another year or so. There's a pretty big barkless one that looks like some kind of medieval torture device. I don't want to be anywhere in the area when that sucker comes down.

Oh noooooo pine! Dennis your gonna burn your house down! :firepit:

Haha seriously, nice score. I discovered recently I can get a lot of pine for free just driving to the town dump, as people dump it here thinking its worthless. Its wood... it burns...

Most of it is laying in back by one of our other wood piles. Some in buzz lengths and some cut to length. So far I haven't split any of it and will probably wait until next spring when the normal splitting is done. I did throw together another sawbuck so I can handle the buzz lengths. Mrs Ornery will help on that one. I can just stand there and saw away while she brings the next log or bunch of small stuff.

EDIT: I forgot to add that Wishlist (Bob) got 2 big trailer loads of the pine for use in his boiler. Last spring was a bad year but next spring should be good and I may take some more of this to him then.

Reds aren't the worst for sure but there will be some. WD-40 on the saw works like a charm. Or any vegetable oil. On skin I like to use Miracle Whip. Like Brylcreem (anyone remember that?), a little dab will do ya.
