This replica has been in Dry dock for 3yrs, being overhauled, Someplace in Connecticut. It's returning to Plymouth Ma, via the Cape Cod Canal. You can't sail through the canal, you have to be under power. There's a tugboat tethered to the far side, that's actually doing the heavy lifting It docked next to Mass Maritime, for a couple of nights. This is from the stern - full camera zoom The tugboat has arrived While waiting, the RR bridge came down The train is going from left to right, about halfway across. Coast Guard joining the escort flotilla Lots of civilian boat traffic I didn't see anyone catch any fish. It wasn't from lask of trying. There was a seal or sea lion that swam by. No pic of that The current in the canal changes with the tide. Low tide here was about 10am. They got underway about an hour earlier, and used the current to assist through the canal
The parking lot was filled to overflowing Across the canal, it was mobbed. Larger parking area there, in Buzzards Bay I was going to head to the east end of the canal and catch it a second time, but the crowds were probably larger. I went home. Thanks for sharing. So many of our ancestors crossed the Atlantic in similar size boats and literally put their lives on the line to do so. It would have been awesome to see it under full sail with a good wind.
Very cool Mike. We took a schooner tour out of Gloucester a few years ago. Motored out of the harbor and then went under sail. Pretty neat trip. If you are on FB, the MA Environmental Police has a page and they are down at the canal a lot doing checks and enforcement of fishing regulations. Pretty interesting to see what they do and how badly people abuse regulations that are in place to protect the natural resources.
There's always reports of people being charged with exceeding various limits, of different species. It always puts a smile on my face when I read them.
They're everywhere checking coolers and "today's catch", whatever that may be. Fish, bales wrapped in waterproofing plastic, etc., etc.. I don't think there's a boat ramp anywhere in the state that doesn't get a visit at least once a year. Checking recreationals and commercials.
The Mayflower II was in New Beige or Fairhaven for a few days. Might have been due to the storm, maybe for cheap diesel originally, I forget why now.
A trip to Newport was cancelled. It spent time in New Bedford, with sea training done in Buzzards Bay, instead
