I've been wanting to drop this dead ash for a couple of years. Today just seemed like the right day to do it. So I gassed up the 661 with a 28" bar/chain and went after it. This is the last large ash on my property.

I tapped an orange wedge into the ground as an aiming point and I think I came close. It hit the ground, the top shattered like glass and the bark popped off. Clean up won't be fun but the payoff is great.

Looks close enough for guberment work. I know the small limbs are a PITA but I take em all down to about wrist size or so. Usually pretty dry in them dead ash.

Ash is my absolute favorite wood to burn. They are a beautiful tree too. It’s a shame the EAB has all but wiped them out in the US.

    I am now!

It's a first year of production model and I had problems with it. Would not start once it reached normal operating temperature.

After I complained to Stihl on their website the regional Stihl guy took it and replaced the electronics. It's run like a wild thing ever since. The new models don't have that problem.

Lesson learned, never buy first year production models!

Good job. Ash is my all around favorite wood also. Those tops being so dry makes for one heck of a mess to clean up.

how does the 661 compare to the 441? I've thought about a 661 but they are heavier and the 460 wears me out after a day, or usually just a few hours.

I had a 441, the model before Stihl pulled it from the market and re-released it, the 661 is way better. Heavier but way more power. Eat your Wheaties before you go out all day with a 661.

Nice dead ash there Ralphie Boy!

If I had to choose between my 460/461 or 660 I’d go with the 660 all day! It’s a bit heavier, but the extra power with long bars is real nice. I’m sure the 661 is better than the 660.

Good job Ralphie boy! That will net you a lot of great firewood. Those dead ash sure like to shatter when they fall.

If you can operate that contraption you call a bicycle over those moon landing roads your days of running a big saw aren't behind you.

Very well done RB! A mess to clean, but lots of good meat still left on that tree.
Ive considered a 660/661 but keeping my CAD in check for now. Ive run the 36" bar on my 460 for huge trunks but not that often i cut them that big. Cant imagine a 91cc saw's power. The 460 does very well wearing a 28" bar. Keep in mind February will be two years since i got it and am still on a honeymoon with it. Going from a 56cc "Farm Boss" to a 460 was quite the jump.

What was the DBH? Good amount of wood in that tree!
