It's actually an SE with an XP starter cover, so no air injection. It has a single thin ringed flat top piston. Compression is about 165 and it runs strong. I split the muffler and found it to be pretty choked up so I opened the baffle and the stock outlet. Only cut a few cookies but it seems like an awesome saw......not sure if it has the cajones of my 346XP though, we shall see after some fine tuning. Back to the interesting history of the 254 series saw. There wasn't an "XP" series when this saw was produced (1987) and as far as IPL's go, there never was an SE, only a 254 and the later 254XP. The early 254XP's did not have air injection. Nevertheless, I think they all ran the same closed port cylinder, but my research has revealed at least 3 piston configurations used over the life of the saw including a domed piston (maybe the late model XP's). After shipping etc., I probably payed close to retail but it had new seals, lines and a carb kit already done.
Black tag that states "Husqvarna 254" with the serial number on the next line and then "Husqvarna" and "Sweden" on the bottom two lines. Serial number starts with 409 so I guess that means the ninth week of 1994 was when it was made.
Just picked up this 154se (254se recoil cover). This ones a runner....compression is at 180. Also got another 254XP needing a piston and good cleaning. Really liking these saws.
I'm closer.... I'll take it off your hands since it's broke. Nice saw bro... You know how I feel it about
