After seeing some posts about homemade picaroons I decided to make my own last night. I never have used one before or even held one in my hand for that matter till I made this one. Nothing more than a 36" piece of broken shovel handle, 2" water line coupling, a piece of old lawn mower blade, 1/4 inch bolt, home made aluminum wedge to tighten it up and a small amount of 6011 to stick it all together. Works great so far. My old back is gonna love not having to bend over to pick up splits and small rounds any more. Now if I can just keep the business end of it outta my feets and legs.... I thought about welding on another chunk of the mower blade on the other side and make an axearoon but I think this will be fine.
Yea, looks good! Whatever gives the ol' back some relief, the better. I made a beeraroon last weekend, but it kept piercing the cans. Sold it on CL as a back scratcher.
Our Canadian version of Harbour Express has a 3 1/2 lb fireman axe similar to this on sale this week for $12. I was going to pick one up tomorrow and do a little grinding to the pick side
I've had the same beeraroon/backscratcher for 35 years. Once in a great while she will drop a can or 2 but I knew way back then when I married her she was kinda clumsy. Hopefully she wont see this post.
Real nice job there Butcher and the fact that you made it from things you had laying around I cut some brush along the edge of the woods the other day and I used mine to collect it up into a pile worked real good, even helped picking up some of it to put in the little trailer, take easy on the old backs
Great job. Looks like it will get it done and that is what really counts. I may have to make one of those myself. I have a peavy I made but not a pickaroon.
Try making yourself a hatchet sized one for close radius swings. Sometimes a short swing is better. Other thing to check out is a pulp hook, same idea but the handle is turned 90 degrees so it only takes a flick of the wrist instead of a swing of your arm to grab a piece of wood and it is a lot easier on your hands.
After much use and drinking and some use I did a self review of my work. I then retired to the hooch where the wife tucked me into bed and removed all fire arms and sharp objects from within my reach. It's all good.
You need to set your standards a whole bunch higher.I had a pretty good load on by that time of day. Call it a personal problem I guess.
I like the video Butcher... It definitely shows the details of the pickeroon better. Be interested in seeing what you come up with in your next design...
Actually I think I will stick with this one now. I just cant swing as hard as I thought I had to and I sanded all the slick varnish offa the handle so I could twist it out of the wood easier.
Working hard in the hot sun, using alcohol for coolant never works out great. I used to have that personal problem myself....
