Moving some chestnut oak splits recently and they had sprouted some "tar" like fungi. Theses were on the bottom near the ground. Some nasty stuff, even got it on my work pants and it didnt wash out all the way in the laundry. Ive seen this before but only on oak. Anyone else ever see this?
Only after I have walked past the stack with a dripping grease gun! Kidding. I've not seen that stuff. Odd. Interested to hear what it is.
A few of the oak logs I got delivered last year had a whole bunch of that on the bark. He told me the logs had been cut and stacked up for awhile so that might have been what caused it to grow. A blast from the garden hose and a stick to pry the stubborn ones off worked for me.
Yes, jelly fungi on oak. I've mostly seen it on dead branches that drop after a rain/wind storm late Summer/early Fall.
Brad, everything we brought in from the score this spring, had that. The wood, particularly the first loads in, sat in the June/July monsoon season here. They were coated with those things. Once things dried out, they shrunk and became kinda tough. Every log was slippery with those things! Sca
Yech, dingleberry jam... Brad, there were no fungi at time of cutting. Sitting in moist conditions for many weeks brought them on. I didn't notice them till splitting time. Those logs were wet....we were splitting in light rain to boot, they never had time to dry out. Sca
