I am a bit torn between newish saw and old with the adjustable carb. Only because I have learned a little bit using my 026 and I've been lucky to adjust it so it screams. Now I just want to have a saw that takes care of the bigger buddies so I can use my 026 for smaller pieces. What do you think? $300? Not trying to lowball him but I see this name often and sells different saws often.
Go thru the regular checks....pull muffler, check piston, etc.... Hope your able to pull the trigger...literally
I like 361 stihls i have ran one that a buddy has and its a beast on medium sized softwoods with a 24 bar and full skip chain. Just make sure it checks out ok the saw kinda looks like its been used a bit.
Or find a home depot that's selling an ex rental dolkita 6421. You'll get a bigger saw for 300 that's got less hours on it. Yes, a 6421 might weigh a little more than a 361, but it's a bigger saw and can be made into a 84cc saw for $100. That's what I did. Well, the stock 6421 so far. It's a really nice saw, even bone stock. Last fall, I ran my 17 yr old 029 super vs a brand new ms362 both 16" with semi chisel chains each. The new 362 was a little lighter, but didn't perform any better than the 029s.
Yes one of those can be made into one of these 79-84cc saws. Just in blue instead of orange. Bench made in Germany also:
Nice saw but theres none actually being sold around here. Theres one but its about 3 hours north of me.
Bummer... I chose my 7910 over a 461, and money had nothing to do with it. Home Depot releases rental tools for sale on a monthly basis. At the beginning of the month I think. A few members here have ended up with these rental saws. Nice read here: Husky 465 rancher becomes Makita 6421
Looked at home depot site near me and nothing about renting saws. Must not be a market here as much since saws are everywhere and can be bought for about as much as you rent them for..60-80 Bucks if that. I didnt get a reply for this saw but I have a 038AV in my sights now and gonna post this. Guy said he would come down to 320. He also says he puts saws together and told me the view behind the muffler is in great shape. I'll still take a look at it. 25 inch bar which takes care of the big boys I may encounter later on. This one may be a better option. It at least has the size and potential for a bigger project.
Make sure the 361 has on OEM cylinder. An 038 is good saw but they don't have a good power to weight ratio like the 361. I think a 361 would out cut an 038. If you are wanting a more powerful saw than your 026 I would try to find a saw in the 70cc but a 60cc saw would still be a good improvement.
Yeah not all home depots have a rental department. Maybe hdtoolmkr765 will weigh in on the 038. He knows those old Stihls pretty well. That 026 you have there is a bulletproof saw. I made a lot of money with those and the 021's and 024's. Used to run exclusively Stihl saws. My big saws at the time we're 044s and and 066. The 044 was bulletproof as well. Personally I'd drive the 3 hours for a much newer saw. Good luck with what ever you decide on.
I've never ran I 291, but I have a 271 and with 18" bar and full chisel, it cuts pretty good. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A good running 361 is a solid worker. Good power, not too heavy. $300 should buy this saw Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
My 026 is wonderful, it has cut a black locust very well just getting into rounds with the normal fuel and oil refills. I was actually surprised after I learned about the wood and having bought a brand new chain and used it that day was probably what helped. Im thinking I just want something that will gun it a bit and not bog down. Ive never cut with a skip chain so that road is not known. Wanna tell me if that is worth it or not? I'll keep up this search since Im sometimes getting replies back or not so its all dependent on the outcome. Some sell their stuff and never reply but to show you im in the market for something larger by at about 15-25 cc's bigger than my 026.
The real benefits of full and semi skip chain is in less cutters to sharpen on a really long bar. If you haven't already, you might consider a muffler mod on the 026 if you haven't already. They can be pretty choked up.
The 361 is a very good saw with great aftermarket support (smalls, wear items is where you can save money). As said above, no deal if the p/c aren't oem; I use aftermarket stuff for my own use but wouldn't buy a saw with an AM cylinder. Oddly enough the $300 is probably the going rate but I wouldn't pay that myself (spoiled with being able to fix saws). It'll be a jump from your 026 but 70cc would be a dramatic difference. You mentioned screaming--- do you tune by ear or tach or both?
Yep. I enjoy running skip for that very reason. If your 026 has the wt-194 fully-adjustable carb, then yes, a muffler mod may help a bit. Also--I wouldn't use skip on shorter bars and wouldn't put a long bar on that 026.
038--- absolute brute of a German design that will probably out-live all of us. They're heavy, but they cut. If it were a mag model it'd be close to an 044/440. The oldest style were similar to 028s--- tons of magnesium, tough bottom ends. Oddly enough they're supported by the aftermarket, too. If that saw was rebuilt it could have a bunch of AM parts.
