We have this field that is called the Cates Place, an old homestead that goes way back, but basically it is a 40 acre field that has a sag right in the middle of it. It is always wet, but darned if that field does not grow some hay. Well back in the day (1930's sometime), my Great-Grandfather was mowing that field and got stuck in it with his old Farmall. Now he was a Farmall man through and through... So it happened to be the John Deere salesman came along and said, "Hey Fred, had you bought a John Deere you would not have gotten stuck." So being upset, he said, "Well get your John deere out here and if it does not get stuck I will buy the thing." Well the salesman did, and the tractor did not get stuck, so being a man of his word, my Great Grandfather bought it, BUT that did not mean he liked it. But being one of the biggest potato farmers around at that time they were always after him to go to the Maine Potato Board and tell them all about his new John Deere. They would not take no for an answer, and instead came down and picked him up for the big meeting. So when they got up there they said "This is Fred LodgedTree, he farms some 400 acres of potatoes, has five tractors to do it, and would like to tell you about his new John Deere." Thinking quick, my Great-Grandfather stood up there to exact his revenge and said "Boy's, I think you are a little confused, you see I got 4 tractors and one John Deere." He said later it was a VERY quiet ride home.
