I only found this thread -- Palm trees? My gf has a palm tree in her backyard and it's dead. She lives in a very nice house, I must say! Three companies have refused to bid. Access is good to the tree. They complained about it's too close to the house and since it's 6 ft away, I don't think is much of a challenge. Also got a comment that felling it could damage the short rock wall surrounding the tree or the concrete apron next to it which leads to the pool, etc. Yes, it could. It doesn't make sense to me that they won't bid... why not just jack it up higher for contingencies? (I wasn't here for the bids.) Ever looked at a palm tree closely? It's very unusual. Of course, they haven't changed in a bazillion years, pretty efficient trees for bending in the wind. I looked it over and it looks like an easy job to me as far as felling it. If I did it, I'd get a rope around near the top and attach the rope to a come-along winch and get the tree in a bind wanting to fall to the anchoring tree which is about 60 ft away. And then fell it. I'd buy a carbide chain. I had a friend get one removed and the tree guy didn't care for it. Said it was gnarly as could be, hard to deal with, and full of sand. But a carbide chain should help. Wondering if anyone has taken a palm tree down. This one has been dead about two years, so, it should have dried out a lot by now. I think they are full of water when green. This one is about 22 ft tall with 19.5" DBH. So, one felling cut, one stump cut, then about 15 more cuts making 16" rounds to haul off. There aren't many fronds left on this tree, it would be pretty much one big stem. I can't see how it would be such a huge deal. Even if I had to buy or rent... chainsaw, truck, even a helper and then buy a carbide chain, rope, come-along. Maybe a wheelbarrow if she doesn't have one. If a company were to bid, if it's like a lot of tree work bids, it'll be high!
My concern is that professional tree trimmers don’t want to have anything to do with it and won’t even bid. That’s a red warning flag…if you attempt it and it goes awry it might be the end of your relationship with your girlfriend. There are lots of YouTube videos where someone ties off a tree or winches it and it still doesn’t fall in the planned direction. Tread carefully.
I've read enough to know that they don't cut like normal trees, and wounds inflicted by the fronds get some heinous infections set up in them due to debris left behind. But there are no palm trees here, so I only know what I read. Do some research, then proceed cautiously!
Palm trees are more like grass than trees. Shouldn't really be anything to it. With a strap up higher, and some forethought it should be easily done.
I've only cut down one and it was from a Storm damage, it was leaning away from the house. Only thing I noticed different was it seemed to gum up the bar and chain.
Ive never seen a palm tree closeup. Be interesting to see how this goes. Please post pics/video when it comes down. Just be mindful of widow maker coconuts Yawner
Yes Canadian border VT , it's Brandon Scott. I heard he is doing fishing youtube videos if the OP wants to find him. Also would clemsonfor know? Palm trees in the Carolinas?
Don't recall seeing any palm trees in Georgia or the Carolinas...but maybe south Georgia on the gulf side?
You know 20 feet isn’t really that tall if you are going to climb it to put a rope up high why not just top the tree and bring it down in sections just like a regular tree If you don’t feel comfortable doing that then can you rent a lift like Eric suggested
