I just burned sycamore for the first time last night. It was from a dead standing tree. I only burnt the rounds which were really dry and sounded like two baseball bats hitting together. It burnt pretty hot but man did that stuff leave a huge amount of ashes. I’ve got the trunk of the tree blocked up but I’m in no hurry to burn it. I’ll split it tomorrow after deer hunting. Is sycamore normally that ashey?
It makes a lot of ash, it’s not something I go after but I won’t let it go to waste if it here at home. I have a face cord css. I have been told to split it green, if it dries out it can be tough splitting.
The trunk looked pretty dry when I blocked it up. I have a wood insert and empty the ash a couple times a week with hardwood. My father-in-law has a big wood stove and can burn anything. I’ll probably just give it to him,
It’s pretty light so not a lot of BTU/volume. Not easy to split. Add in the amount of ash and it doesn’t add up to great firewood. It’s the kind of wood that if it falls in the yard and I’ve got nothing better to do with my time I’ll put it up if there is space in the stacks and there aren’t better options. Otherwise, I enjoy a good bonfire as much as the next guy
I got 3/4 cord of rounds about a month ago. Rolled and stacked under my wood shed. Heavy SOBs. I have OWB. Should I split now or just let them season for next year and throw them in whole? Some heavy wood. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ive learned on here it is. I avoid sycamore as i hand split and its a lower btu wood. Maybe have burned a few pieces of it over the years in round form.
Very tough to hand split once it dries - I called a buddy to use his hydraulic splitter a few years back. Lot of effort for not that many btus. I avoid it now as so still hand split everything but I do remember a lot of ash.
