I posted this over on proboards thought Id bring it back up here especially after I found this http://essay-group.com/products-page/online/ somebody had suggested making a bunch of torches and selling them at a local craft show or something then I see this on tv today dang someone beat me to it.
Anyway heres mine it was a lot of fun real easy to make and lasted for several hours we did keep adding stuff to it though so I imagine that if you just let it burn by itself it would only last a couple hours.

Thanks for the post . Reminded me to make a few out of locust . Might even try it on an old Aspen stump that needs to be gone .

The innagural burn in my keyhole pit was a Swedish candle (torch).

'Twas an ash round, burned bright, but not all night... :)

When you start these what do you use to light it? Are you just putting paper in them? Or adding some lighter fluid to help it along?

I used some crumbled up Super Cedar and then a lil hand sanitizer, to help get it all going pretty quick.

The hole in the center becomes pretty large because of the cutting. You can use a variety of methods.

Okay. And you just hold it in place somehow when you cut your pie sections into it? Never made one before. Need to. Thinks I will make a bunch for the camp and fam to enjoy.

I used a couple handfuls of noodles stuffed here and there in the cuts and half a super cedar Im sure anything will work though basically make a fire on top and once it gets going sit back and relax. As far as making the torch itself I just set a round on top of another round that was bigger and cut it down to about the bottom turned cut again and so on. Give it a shot youll see its pretty easy.
