Somewhat springlike today in SoVT. Yesterday it was cloudy, never got above freezing and few flakes flying.

It’s been windy in New England the past few weeks and this Beech blew down up back. Sadly, most of these trees get some type of fungus and don’t make it to full maturity. Many blow down or partially rot and fall.

The MS250 did well here. May be time for a chain, had a mix of chips and dust later on in the cuts.

Was able to drop what was left of the trunk downhill and avoided the small sapling close to it.

Not a bad haul! Stacked it atop some oak rounds I cut in the fall. I’ll get to splitting in the next few weeks.

Nice bit of beech there! Love burning beech. Is it beech bark disease you’re seeing do you think? We’ve got it bad down here. Luckily up here in the hills of CT it’s not as bad as other areas get. It’s definitely happening though. The porcupines chew the bark off the smaller beech, too.

It is nice when you can cut them up when they are off the ground. Saves the back.

I think it is. There's a good amount of Beech in the woods in SoVT. Very rarely will you see one that has smooth bark. Most of the trees, get those bumps on them. This one was in pretty decent shape considering. Usually, they'll fall and a section of the rounds cut will be punky. B

I found some info here: Beech Diseases It's too bad if nothing can be done about the disease/fungus.
