Well I made a really dumb decisions today that luckily for me ended OK for the most part. I cut a lot today started early and just now walked in the door beat. This was the last tree of the day and but decided to try to take it down anyways. It is a really bad leaner that is growing over the trail and we have needed to drop for awhile.

I made me face cut and then
made my plunge and started cutting out the back. Mistake one was when I made the plunge I
could tell it was hollow but due to being in a rush I continued. Came out the back and the tree hinged as planned with no barber chair.

Then when it started to come down it went in the ground like spear and was stuck there not attached to the stump but resting on the stump. I figured I could easily pull it towards the up hill side and figured it would easily come over. I thought about grabbing a rope so I could stand back but decided to see how hung up it felt. Walked over to the tree in the middle and pulled gently on a branch and the whole tree started coming at me. I turned aroumd and starred running as hard as I could but couldn't get away. The big branch on the right in the picture hit me in the shoulder and arm and knocked me off my feet I hit the ground and felt the tree hit the ground. When it was all over I was laying there right between the branches. Thought I broke my arm and it was a good 5 minutes before I could move it but I think it was nothing but really bad muscle bruising. My should and arm hurt pretty bad but as bad as bit could have been I feel blessed.

Be very careful guys and when you get tired just stop. I didn't even have a saw in my hands but I am so thankful that I had my helmet on or it would have been way worse when the branches hit me in the back of the head.

I'm glad your ok, thats number 1. I think this whole thing is the big man upstairs throwing a test at you, you survived what could have been a bad one.
And you said it best, end of the day, tired, looking to finish up and this tree shows up to throw a wrench in the works.

Been there many times myself. Glad your OK!!

Good thing you ain't hurt bad....or worse. That thing must have been balanced there pretty precariously if all you did was tug on it and she started to roll over. That doesn't appear to be a small tree....dang, that was close.

Yeah it was a really stupid mistake. It was one of those time that I even thought about it but dismissed it as no way it would happen I was actually checking to see if it was going to take the truck to pull it over and it obviously didn't. I still can't believe I didn't end up under that branch.

    I've been thinkin'.
If it were me, I'd buck that tree up, split it, and throw it through my stove in a year or two for punishment :axe:

I'm glad your okay Certified106, my FIL once told me, if you're tired you don't want a chainsaw in your hand, I try to remember that.

Thanks for putting this up, I have two trees just like this that need cutting.

Glad you're ok, Cert. You were definitely being watched over today. Rest up and heal quick. You shared a valuable lesson about being tired and in potentially dangerous situations.

All of the above buddy, that was definitely close! If fatigue is the #1 killer, taking short-cuts is the #2 ...................... If it hadn't been for my career, I'd have been gone long ago ......................... By nature, I'd easily be one of the worst offenders, but having to "set the example" has kept me alive!

Feeling ok this morning just stiff and sore. Got up and got moving though as I had a condenser fan motor to replace on a heatpump and I'm headed out in a bit to go replace a control board on an old furnace which isn't going to be fun. They don't make the old board any more so I have to rewire some stuff to make the replacement board work.

For sure, this is the time when bad things can happen. Hopefully this is one lesson you will never forget. A long day, tired, just one more.... Bad.

Also, I have no idea why you would do a plunge on that and then to continue when you saw it was hollow. Another lesson there.

Can you outrun a tree? NO! Never try. If you run, never run in the direction the tree will go. Always go at an angle back and away from the tree.
